Mountain Hiking: A Major Change on the PR1 Pico do Areeiro – Pico Ruivo Trail
The most famous and sought-after mountain hike in Madeira, PR1 Vereda do Areeiro, is undergoing a significant change. Starting tomorrow, May 1st, it will partially reopen after its winter closure, but under entirely new conditions.
Who is affected?
All hikers planning to complete the trek between Madeira’s third-highest and highest peaks.
What does this mean in practice?
- Fee: Access to the trail now costs €10.50 per person.
- Booking: Tickets must be purchased in advance online via the simplifica.madeira.gov.pt portal. You will not be allowed on the trail without a ticket.
- One-Way System: The trail will operate strictly in one direction, from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo. Returning via the same route will not be possible.
- Limited Operation: During May, due to ongoing repairs, the trail will only be open on weekends, from Friday to Sunday.
Our Recommendation
If you plan to do this hike, act now. Book your ticket online and, most importantly, arrange your transportation from the end of the trail at Achada do Teixeira, as there is no regular public transport service from there. Be aware that organizing this trip is now significantly more challenging.
Funchal in Bloom: The Festa da Flor Has Begun
The capital city, Funchal, is adorned with flowers today as the biggest spring event – Festa da Flor – officially kicks off. The streets are filled with colors, scents, and a festive atmosphere, but also with people.
Who is affected?
Visitors to Funchal, culture lovers, families with children, and drivers in the city center.
What does this mean in practice?
- Busy City Center: The main thoroughfare, Avenida Arriaga, and the square, Praça do Município, are the heart of the event. You’ll find flower markets and exhibitions here, along with large crowds.
- More Visitors from the Sea: The giant cruise ship MSC Grandiosa is docked in the harbor today, which means thousands of additional visitors in the city center, at the Monte cable car, and in restaurants. Expect longer queues.
- Cleanliness and Noise: The city has increased its cleaning services, so Funchal will be sparkling clean. However, be prepared for cleaning vehicles operating in the early morning and late evening hours.
Our Recommendation
Enjoy the unique festival atmosphere, but be patient. If you want to avoid the biggest crowds, plan your visit to the city center for the morning or late afternoon. A walk along the pier with a view of the docked cruise ship is a great experience today.
Practical Information and Safety
Beware of High Waves: Don’t Risk It for a Photo
Authorities are warning against dangerous behavior along the coast, especially in the Ponta do Sol area. Strong surf and high waves can be unpredictable. We strongly advise you to respect safety barriers, keep a safe distance from the edges of cliffs and piers, and not to risk your life for a dramatic social media photo.
No Wild Camping
We remind you that camping outside of designated areas (‘wild camping’) is strictly prohibited in Madeira and subject to fines. In recent days, police have dealt with cases of camping directly on Praia Formosa beach and near the cable car station in Funchal. Camping is legally permitted only in official campsites or at forest campgrounds after obtaining a free online permit from the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN).
