Weather Takes Center Stage: High Winds in the Mountains and Large Waves on the Coast
Madeira is currently under a yellow weather warning for high winds, in effect until 6:00 PM today. Wind gusts may reach up to 75 km/h, and even up to 95 km/h in the mountains. Additionally, the Funchal Port Authority has issued a warning for rough seas, particularly on the north coast, where waves are expected to reach heights of 4 to 5 meters.
- Who is affected: All tourists, especially those planning mountain hikes or coastal activities.
- What this means: High-altitude ridge hikes are dangerous. On the north coast (e.g., in Porto Moniz and Seixal), swimming is extremely risky. It is crucial to stay away from breakwaters and cliff edges.
- Recommendation: Avoid high-altitude mountain treks today. If you want to watch the waves, find a safe viewpoint from a sufficient distance.
Disruptions to Air and Road Travel
The adverse weather has also impacted transportation. Cristiano Ronaldo Airport is reporting complications that will affect many travelers.
Funchal Airport (FNC)
Due to the high winds, four flights have already been canceled, and other aircraft have had difficulty landing, forcing them to circle in the air.
- Who is affected: Passengers arriving in or departing from Madeira today.
- What this means: Your flight may be delayed, diverted, or canceled.
- Recommendation: Check your flight status regularly with your airline or on the airport’s website. Be prepared for potential delays.
Roads and Ferry
Please exercise caution while driving, especially on exposed sections of the Via Rápida highway. In the Machico area, a fallen tree has temporarily restricted traffic on one of the roads. The Lobo Marinho ferry to Porto Santo is operating, but the journey is very rough due to the high waves.
- Who is affected: Drivers and passengers traveling to the island of Porto Santo.
- What this means: Potential traffic disruptions in the east of the island and an uncomfortable ferry crossing.
- Recommendation: If you are prone to seasickness, it is advisable to postpone your ferry trip.
Current Status of Hiking Trails (PRs) and Levadas
The wind and recent rainfall have led to the closure of several popular hiking trails. Safety is the top priority.
Closed and Dangerous Trails
We strongly advise against attempting any high-altitude ridge hikes. Official sources (IFCN) report the following restrictions:
- PR1 Vereda do Areeiro: The route between Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo is only partially open (only up to the Miradouro da Pedra Rija viewpoint). The full traverse between the peaks is not possible.
- Fully closed trails: PR1.3 (Encumeada), PR7 (Levada do Moinho), PR10 (Levada do Furado), PR16 (Levada Fajã do Rodrigues), PR20 (Vereda do Jardim do Mar), and PR28 (Levada da Fajã do Penedo).
Open Trails Requiring Extra Caution
Some levadas at lower altitudes remain open, such as PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde or PR18 Levada do Rei. However, extra caution is required here as well due to the risk of falling branches. Safe alternatives for today include visiting the botanical gardens in Funchal or taking a walk through more sheltered parts of the city.
Good News to End On
On a positive note for future travelers, the sister island of Porto Santo is set to become even more accessible. New direct flight routes, including a connection from Prague, are being introduced for the upcoming season, making it easier to reach its famous golden beaches.
