Today’s Key Events
Saturday in Madeira is affected by two main events: a fire in the Faial area in the north of the island and the presence of Saharan dust in the air, which is reducing visibility. Tourists should adjust their plans, especially in the mountains and on the north coast. Here is a summary of the most important information.
Safety and Weather
⚠️ Fire in the Faial Area (Santana)
- Who is affected? All drivers and tourists in the Santana municipality on the north of the island.
- What this means in practice: A large-scale firefighting operation is underway in the Fajã da Murta (Faial) area. Roads in the vicinity may have limited access due to the movement of emergency vehicles. There is smoke in the area.
- Our recommendation: Avoid the wider Faial area today. If you must drive through, proceed with extreme caution and give way to emergency services.
😷 Saharan Dust Over the Island (Calema)
- Who is affected? Photographers, viewpoint enthusiasts, and individuals with respiratory issues.
- What this means in practice: Dust particles in the atmosphere are creating a milky haze and reducing long-distance visibility. Views from peaks like Pico do Areeiro or the Cabo Girão cliff will not be sharp and clear today. Air quality is poor.
- Our recommendation: If you were looking forward to crystal-clear photos from the mountains, plan them for another day. We advise sensitive individuals to limit strenuous hikes at higher altitudes. The airport is currently operating without restrictions.
🚶 Caution in Funchal
- Who is affected? Visitors to the center of Funchal, especially around the Mercado dos Lavradores market.
- What this means in practice: Although Madeira is extremely safe, an isolated incident has been reported. It is always wise to exercise increased caution in busy tourist areas.
- Our recommendation: Behave as you would in any other European city—watch your belongings and avoid suspicious situations.
Status of Hiking Trails (Levadas & Veredas)
Before any hike, check the current status on the official IFCN website. The following key restrictions apply today:
- PR1 Vereda do Areeiro: PARTIALLY OPEN. Madeira’s most famous trek is only accessible on the section from Pico do Areeiro to the Miradouro da Pedra Rija viewpoint (approx. 1.2 km). The crossing to Pico Ruivo via this route IS NOT possible! The eastern section through the tunnels is closed.
- Levada das 25 Fontes: OPERATIONAL CHANGES. Due to maintenance, a previously one-way section is temporarily two-way. Expect bottlenecks in narrow spots; please be patient and considerate of other hikers.
- PR3 Vereda do Burro (Pico do Areeiro): CLOSED. This trail remains closed.
- Entrance Fee: A reminder that on designated PR trails, there may be checks for the payment of the environmental fee (approx. €3) for non-residents.
What to Look Forward to Today
It’s not all restrictions. If you’re looking for something to do, we have two suggestions for you:
- Culture in Funchal: This evening, the Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias is hosting an anniversary concert for composer António Pinho Vargas. A great opportunity to experience local culture.
- Festival in Porto da Cruz: The picturesque village in the northeast is holding celebrations for a local scout festival. You can experience an authentic community atmosphere here.
