Trail Status: Alert for Levada das 25 Fontes
The most important news for all hikers heading to the mountains concerns one of the island’s most popular trails. If you are planning a hike today, please pay close attention to the following restrictions.
PR 6 – Levada das 25 Fontes / Risco
- Who is affected? All hikers planning to visit Rabaçal.
- What does this mean in practice? A temporarily closed bypass means the main one-way section to the 25 Fontes waterfall is now operating as a two-way trail. This is causing frequent bottlenecks and lengthy delays as groups try to pass each other on the narrow path.
- Our recommendation: If possible, choose a different trail today. If you are still set on hiking PR 6, start either very early in the morning (before 9:00 AM) or later in the afternoon (after 3:00 PM) to avoid the biggest crowds.
Other Closed Trails
For the sake of completeness, please note that the following trails remain closed for safety or maintenance reasons:
- PR 10 (Levada do Furado): Closed due to a landslide.
- PR 3 (Vereda do Pico do Castelo): This applies only to the island of Porto Santo; closed due to construction work.
- PR 1 (Vereda do Areeiro): The route between Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo is only accessible via the western path (through the tunnels). The eastern route via Pico das Torres is closed long-term.
Weather and an Indoor Activity Tip
Today’s forecast is cloudy with a chance of light showers, especially on the north coast and at higher altitudes. Temperatures will range from 14 to 20°C. In the mountains, expect reduced visibility and slippery terrain—don’t forget a waterproof jacket and sturdy footwear.
Tip: Visit the Whale Museum
- Who is it for? Families with children, couples, and solo travelers looking for something to do on a cloudy day.
- What’s the plan? Instead of waiting for the sun, head to Caniçal to visit the award-winning Whale Museum (Museu da Baleia). It offers a fascinating look at the history of whaling and the current conservation of marine mammals. The museum is currently reporting record-breaking attendance.
- Our recommendation: Due to the weather, the museum may be busier than usual. Even so, it’s an excellent alternative to outdoor activities.
Ocean Safety: Be Extremely Cautious
Although meteorologists have not issued any extreme wave warnings, today’s news has unfortunately served as a reminder of how treacherous the Madeiran ocean can be.
- Who is affected? Anyone planning to swim, snorkel, dive, or participate in other water sports.
- What does this mean in practice? Even when the weather seems calm, there can be strong underwater currents. Two tragic incidents have been reported, serving as a grave warning.
- Our recommendation: Do not overestimate your abilities. Only enter the water at supervised and protected beaches, such as those in Machico or Calheta. Exercise extreme caution and never swim alone.
Other Practical Information
- Summit in Funchal Port: A European cruise ship summit is taking place in Funchal. You may notice increased activity around the port, but it’s also an opportunity to see some interesting vessels docked.
- Airport Checks: Security services are active at the airport. Ensure you have all your travel documents in order and readily available.
- Travelers via Lisbon: A minor earthquake was recorded in the Lisbon area on mainland Portugal. It is not expected to impact airport operations, but if you are flying through Lisbon, check your flight status just in case. The tremors were not felt in Madeira.
