Coastal Alert: High Surf Warning

The Port Authority has extended the high surf warning until Saturday. The weather’s power is particularly evident on the north coast, but caution is necessary across the entire island. Unfortunately, a tragic incident in the usually calmer south, at Ponta do Sol, underscores the critical need to respect the ocean.

  • Who is affected: All visitors to coastlines, beaches, and harbors.
  • What this means in practice: Access to piers and breakwaters is strictly prohibited. Walking close to the sea can be dangerous due to unpredictable waves. Swimming in the ocean is extremely risky.
  • Our recommendation: Obey red flags and instructions from lifeguards. Enjoy the ocean view from a safe distance, such as from a café or viewpoint.

In the Mountains: Wind, Fog, and Traffic Complications

High-altitude areas are currently reporting colder weather, strong winds, and precipitation, which are significantly reducing visibility. We do not recommend planning hikes to the island’s highest peaks today. Furthermore, the wind is causing falling trees, which may lead to traffic disruptions.

  • Who is affected: Hikers heading to mountain trails (Pico do Areeiro, Pico Ruivo) and drivers in the Camacha and Poiso areas.
  • What this means in practice: A fallen tree has blocked a road in the Camacha area. A search for a missing tourist is underway near Poiso, which may restrict parking and access on forest roads. Visibility at viewpoints like Eira do Serrado or Pico do Areeiro is likely zero.
  • Our recommendation: It is best to avoid high-altitude hikes today. If you drive into the mountains, do so with caution and be prepared for potential delays or detours.

Status of Trails and Levadas (PR Routes)

The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has updated the status of recommended hiking routes. Always check the current status on their official website before any hike.

  • PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Areeiro ↔ Pico Ruivo): The trail is partially open. Only the western path through the tunnels is accessible. The eastern, more challenging path via Pico das Torres is CLOSED.
  • PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada: The entire trail remains CLOSED.
  • PR 6 Levada das 25 Fontes: The section known as the “bypass” is closed. A one-way system is in effect on-site; please follow the local signage.
  • Entrance Fee: A reminder that non-residents are required to pay a €3 fee to access the recommended routes (PR).

Tips for Alternative Activities

Don’t let the weather spoil your day! Madeira offers plenty of great experiences away from the mountain ridges.

  • Santa Cruz Carnival: If you’re planning for the weekend, a grand carnival parade with 800 participants will take place in Santa Cruz on Sunday afternoon. It’s a great opportunity to experience an authentic atmosphere outside of Funchal. Expect traffic restrictions in the town center.
  • City and Culture: Explore the museums in Funchal, visit the Mercado dos Lavradores market, or enjoy a Madeira wine tasting at Blandy’s Wine Lodge.
  • Gardens and Parks: Botanical gardens at lower altitudes can be a pleasant and safe destination.
