Weather and Sea Safety: Admire the North Coast from a Safe Distance

The main story today is the coastal weather. Meteorologists have extended the warning for strong swells, which applies especially to the north coast of the island and Porto Santo. Waves of 4 to 4.5 meters are expected.

  • Who is affected: Anyone planning to swim, practice water sports, or walk in the immediate vicinity of the sea.
  • What this means in practice: The natural pools in Porto Moniz and Seixal may be closed for safety reasons. Whale and dolphin watching boat trips may be canceled or have their routes altered.
  • Our recommendation: For swimming and relaxing by the water today, definitely choose the calmer south coast (e.g., the areas of Funchal, Calheta, Ponta do Sol). Visit the north coast for its dramatic views, but keep a safe distance from the waves.

Trail and Mountain Route Status: Important Closure Alerts

The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has updated the status of the hiking trails. Before planning a mountain hike, check the current situation, as several major restrictions are in effect today.

PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Areeiro ↔ Pico Ruivo)

Madeira’s most famous trail is partially closed. Only the initial section from Pico do Areeiro to the Miradouro da Pedra Rija viewpoint (approx. 1.2 km) is passable. The rest of the trail towards Pico Ruivo is inaccessible.

  • What this means in practice: The full traverse between the island’s third and first highest peaks is not possible today.
  • Our recommendation: If you go to Pico do Areeiro, enjoy the short walk and the fantastic views from the accessible part, and then return to the car park.

How to Get to Pico Ruivo?

You can reach Madeira’s highest peak via the alternative, shorter route PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo. The starting point is at the car park in Achada do Teixeira, and this path is currently open and safe.

Other Closed Trails

The following popular trails also remain fully closed due to maintenance or damage: PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada, PR 7 Levada do Moinho, PR 10 Levada do Furado, and PR 16 Levada Fajã do Rodrigues.

Transport and Island Travel

If you’re driving today, be extra cautious. Several accidents on the main VR1 highway complicated traffic this morning, which may still cause delays, especially around Funchal. In the mountain area of Camacha, a fallen tree temporarily blocked a road.

  • Who is affected: All drivers.
  • Our recommendation: Before heading to the airport, check the current traffic situation on apps like Waze or Google Maps. In higher altitudes and forested sections, be prepared for possible fallen branches after strong winds.

Funchal is Buzzing with Carnival Preparations

Despite the windy weather in the north, a festive atmosphere prevails in Funchal. Preparations for one of Europe’s best carnivals are in full swing, with hotel occupancy nearing 90%. For lovers of tradition, a special program is also available at the Santana Theme Park.

  • Who is affected: Visitors to Funchal and families with children.
  • Our recommendation: Expect increased activity and possible short-term road closures in downtown Funchal due to the construction of stands and decorations. If you want to go out for dinner at a popular restaurant tonight, we recommend making a reservation as soon as possible.
