Safety First: Rough Seas and Coastal Closures

The main story in Madeira today is the turbulent ocean. Meteorologists have extended the yellow warning for high waves until Sunday. This situation directly impacts the safety and plans of many visitors, especially in coastal areas.

  • Who is affected: Anyone planning to be near the sea, swim, or visit coastal towns.
  • What this means in practice: For safety reasons, the piers in Ponta do Sol and Madalena do Mar are closed. In Funchal, access to the sea and the pools at the popular Lido complex has been closed, and waves have caused damage at Praia Formosa beach.
  • Our recommendation: Respect all closures and red flags. Do not enter the piers or coastal promenades in the affected areas. Boat trips may be canceled; please verify their status with the operator. Today is an ideal day to explore the island’s interior.

For Hikers: Important Restrictions on Mountain Trails

Always check the official status of trails before planning a hike. Today, key restrictions are in place on the island’s highest peaks.

  • Who is affected: Hikers and trekkers heading to Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo.
  • What this means in practice:
    • PR1 Vereda do Areeiro: The most popular ridge trail is only passable for a short section from Pico do Areeiro to the Miradouro da Pedra Rija viewpoint (approx. 1.2 km). The path through the tunnels to Pico Ruivo is closed due to the risk of landslides. Do not attempt to bypass the closures.
    • PR1.3 Vereda da Encumeada: The trail from Pico Ruivo to Encumeada is completely closed.
  • Our recommendation: Plan only a short walk on PR1 to the first viewpoint and back. As an alternative, consider one of the levada walks at lower altitudes, such as in the Rabaçal area or on the north side of the island. Also, remember that a new reservation and fee system is now in place for access to selected trails.

On the Road: Highway Delays and Airport Situation

Expect potential complications when traveling around the island today, especially near Funchal.

  • Who is affected: Drivers and travelers heading to the airport.
  • What this means in practice: An accident on the VR1 highway on the Santa Rita ascent (direction from Ribeira Brava to Funchal) is causing significant delays, which could add 30–45 minutes to your travel time.
  • Our recommendation: If you are traveling in this direction to the airport, leave with plenty of extra time. Flights are not being canceled en masse, but given the weather, we recommend checking the current status of your flight on the airport’s website.

Tip of the Day: The Madeira Carnival Begins!

Despite the adverse weather on the coast, today also has its cheerful side. The famous Madeira Carnival officially kicks off.

  • Who is affected: Anyone wanting to experience authentic local culture.
  • What this means in practice: The carnival season is traditionally opened by the “Festa dos Compadres” event in the town of Santana on the north side of the island. Expect streets filled with satirical floats, music, and local specialties.
  • Our recommendation: If your swimming plans have been thwarted, a trip to Santana is a fantastic alternative. You’ll experience a unique atmosphere and get a taste of Madeiran traditions.
