Main Update: Strong Winds Approaching, Be Cautious

The most important information for today is a weather warning issued by the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) regarding deteriorating conditions. Enjoy your day, but be sure to adapt your evening and tomorrow’s plans to the current situation.

  • Who is affected? All visitors to the island, especially those planning activities in the mountains, on the north coast, and at sea.
  • What does this mean in practice? A yellow weather warning for strong winds will be in effect starting at 9:00 PM today. Gusts of up to 75 km/h are expected, reaching up to 100 km/h in mountainous areas. Sea conditions will also worsen significantly tomorrow, with waves potentially reaching heights of up to 10 meters.
  • What do we recommend? Plan to return from hikes and outdoor activities before dusk. In the evening, avoid walking on piers and cliffs, especially on the north coast (in areas like Porto Moniz and Seixal). If you are staying in an apartment, secure any loose items on your balcony. Do not park your car under trees.

Conditions for Hiking and Levadas

Given the wind forecast, maximum caution is required when planning hikes.

  • Who is affected? All hikers and trekking enthusiasts.
  • What does this mean in practice? Ridge hikes, such as the popular PR1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Areeiro – Pico Ruivo), are extremely dangerous under these conditions. The trail may be officially closed. There is also an increased risk of falling branches even on forested sections of other trails.
  • What do we recommend? We strongly advise against attempting any ridge hikes this afternoon and evening. Instead, opt for safer walks at lower elevations on the more sheltered south coast, such as along promenades or on shorter, less exposed levada trails.

Traffic: Potential Delays on Key Routes

Two minor incidents were reported during the day that may affect traffic flow.

  • Who is affected? Drivers and passengers traveling across the center of the island or to the airport.
  • What does this mean in practice? Firefighters responded to a vehicle fire in the Serra de Água area (a key route connecting Ribeira Brava and São Vicente). Another incident (an electrical short circuit) occurred on the Estrada do Aeroporto.
  • What do we recommend? Drive with extra caution in these locations and expect possible delays. Before heading to the airport, allow extra travel time and check the latest traffic conditions on online maps.
