Crowded Funchal and Traffic Alerts
The capital city is experiencing a surge today. Four cruise ships are docked in the harbor, which means over 9,000 extra visitors in the streets.
Who is affected? Anyone planning to visit the center of Funchal.
What does this mean in practice? Expect high concentrations of people, especially around the promenade, the Mercado dos Lavradores market, and the Monte cable car. Restaurants and cafes will likely be fuller than usual.
Our recommendation: If you’re looking for a quieter experience, plan a trip outside of Funchal for the morning and early afternoon. Drivers heading east from Funchal (towards Camacha) should check the status of the VE5 road, where an accident has been reported.
Weather: Respect the Power of the Ocean
Meteorologists have issued a yellow warning for rough seas. On the north and south coasts, in particular, waves are expected to reach heights of 4 to 4.5 meters. The weather in the mountains may include strong winds and rain showers.
Who is affected? Everyone heading to the coast, beaches, or on boat trips.
What does this mean in practice? Swimming on unprotected beaches is strongly discouraged. Dolphin and whale watching boat trips may be canceled or experience very rough conditions.
Our recommendation: Be extremely cautious on coastal promenades, piers, and rocky viewpoints. Do not get close to the waves.
Hiking Trail Status: Key Changes in the Mountains
The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has updated the status of the trails. Some popular routes are closed or have restricted access. Plan carefully!
Who is affected? All hikers and lovers of Madeira’s nature.
- PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Areeiro ↔ Pico Ruivo): PARTIALLY OPEN. The full route between the two highest peaks is not possible. Only a short section from Pico do Areeiro to the Miradouro da Pedra Rija viewpoint (approx. 1.2 km) is open.
- PR 10 Levada do Furado (Ribeiro Frio): CLOSED due to a landslide.
- PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada: CLOSED.
- PR 5 Vereda das Funduras: OPEN. A good alternative for today.
Our recommendation: Do not plan to hike from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo today. As an alternative, choose the open PR5 or safe levada walks at lower altitudes on the south side of the island. Remember that some trails require online booking and a fee.
Evening Tip: Experience Folklore in Santa Cruz
If you want to experience something authentic, head to the town of Santa Cruz (near the airport). The Santo Amaro festivities are taking place, symbolically closing the Christmas season. You can expect stalls, local cuisine, and a traditional atmosphere.
