Mountain Hiking: Key Restriction on PR1 (Pico do Areeiro ↔ Pico Ruivo)

This is the most important news for everyone heading to Madeira’s highest peaks. The full traverse between Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo is not possible today.

Status of the PR1 Vereda do Areeiro Trail

  • PARTIALLY OPEN: From Pico do Areeiro, you can only reach the Miradouro da Pedra Rija viewpoint (approx. 1.2 km).
  • MAIN SECTION CLOSED: The section beyond the viewpoint, including the tunnels and steep staircases leading to Pico Ruivo, is impassable. The traverse from Areeiro to Pico Ruivo is NOT possible.

What We Recommend

If your goal is the island’s highest peak, Pico Ruivo (1862m), choose the alternative, easier route:

  • Alternative: Take the PR1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo trail. Drive to the car park at Achada do Teixeira, from where a comfortable and fully open path leads to the summit.

Other Trail Restrictions

  • Closed Trails: PR1.3 Vereda da Encumeada, PR28 Levada da Rocha Vermelha, PR20 Vereda do Jardim do Mar.
  • Popular Trails Open: PR6 Levada das 25 Fontes and PR 1.1 Vereda da Ilha are reported as open and operational.
  • Fees: Remember that select trails require online booking and payment via the Simplifica portal.

Caution at Sea: High Wave Warning

The Funchal Port Authority has extended the high surf warning, primarily affecting the north coast and the island of Porto Santo. Meteorologists expect waves up to 12 meters high in the coming days.

What This Means in Practice:

  • Entry is forbidden on piers and breakwaters.
  • Dangerous conditions for swimming, including in the natural pools at Porto Moniz or Seixal, which may be closed or unsafe due to the waves.
  • Boat trips and the ferry to Porto Santo may be canceled or experience heavy rolling.

Our Recommendation

To visit the coast today, choose the south side of the island. Visit viewpoints on the north coast with extreme caution and keep a safe distance from cliff edges. Today is ideal for exploring the island’s interior, visiting Funchal, or hiking one of the levadas at lower altitudes.

Tips and Points of Interest for Today

  • For Sports Fans: The U19 Women’s European Water Polo Championship begins in Funchal (at the Penteada swimming complex). An interesting alternative for an evening out or to escape bad weather.
  • Original Souvenir: The local winery Justino’s, in collaboration with the Diocese of Funchal, has released a special edition of Madeira wine. A unique gift with a story.
  • For Peace of Mind: If you see media reports about light tremors near the Desertas Islands, there is no cause for alarm. These were imperceptible micro-earthquakes, which are common in this volcanic region.
