Mountain and Coastal Hiking: Important Restrictions
Today’s weather is proving challenging and requires flexibility from all visitors. Key advisories are in effect for the island’s highest mountains and the north coast.
PR1 Vereda do Areeiro is temporarily CLOSED
- Who is affected? All hikers who planned the traverse between Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo.
- What this means: Following overnight rains, a rockslide has occurred. The trail is unstable, dangerous, and officially closed. Entry is strictly forbidden, and ignoring the barriers is life-threatening.
- What we recommend: If you want to reach the island’s highest peak, Pico Ruivo, choose the safe and open alternative route: the PR1.2 trail from Achada do Teixeira. It’s a shorter and significantly easier hike.
Warning: High Waves on the North Coast
- Who is affected? Travelers heading by car or bus to the north of the island, especially to the Porto Moniz and Seixal areas.
- What this means: A yellow weather warning is in effect for waves reaching heights of 4 to 5 meters. The natural lava pools in both Porto Moniz and Seixal will most likely be closed (indicated by a red flag). Staying near the coastline is dangerous.
- What we recommend: Postpone your trip to the north today. Instead, enjoy the calmer and sunnier weather on the south coast, in the area between Funchal and Calheta.
Transportation: Airport Delays and Added Ferry Services
Travel plans today are being influenced not only by the situation in the mountains but also by wind and increased holiday demand.
Strong Winds Impacting Airport Operations
- Who is affected? Passengers flying from or to Madeira today, as well as their friends and family.
- What this means: Strong wind gusts are complicating landings, leading to some flight diversions and subsequent departure delays.
- What we recommend: Before heading to the airport, check the current status of your flight on your airline’s website or the Funchal Airport (FNC) website. The wind is expected to weaken in the late afternoon.
Extra Ferries to Porto Santo
- Who is affected? Tourists considering a trip to the neighboring ‘Golden Island’ of Porto Santo.
- What this means: Due to high demand ahead of the long weekend, the Porto Santo Line company has added extra crossings. This is a great opportunity to visit the famous nine-kilometer beach.
- What we recommend: Don’t hesitate—book your tickets online as soon as possible. Availability, especially for vehicles, is filling up quickly.
Funchal is Buzzing with Flower Festival Preparations
While nature shows its harsher side in the mountains, the capital city is dressing up in colors and scents.
Festa da Flor: Experience the Unique Atmosphere
- Who is affected? Visitors to downtown Funchal.
- What this means: Right on the streets, especially along the Avenida Arriaga promenade, you can watch florists creating magnificent flower carpets. The atmosphere is unique, but expect large crowds, traffic restrictions, and difficult parking.
- What we recommend: Leave your car at your accommodation and head into the city center on foot or by public transport. Don’t miss a visit to the Flower Market (Mercado das Flores) and be sure to take a photo of the iconic Wall of Hope (Muro da Esperança).
