New Year’s Eve in Funchal: Traffic and Logistics
The capital city is preparing for one of the biggest events of the year – the New Year’s fireworks display. This involves a number of logistical measures that will affect movement around the city.
What You Need to Know
- Who this affects: All tourists staying in Funchal or those heading to the city center for the celebrations.
- What this means in practice: The city center, especially the Avenida do Mar area and adjacent streets, will be closed to all traffic from the afternoon onwards. Parking downtown will be virtually impossible.
- Our recommendation: Head to the center on foot or use a taxi/Bolt, but have them drop you off at the edge of the closed zone. If you want a good spot to watch the fireworks (e.g., Parque de Santa Catarina), arrive well in advance, ideally in the early evening.
Weather: Snow on Madeira’s Peaks?
Meteorologists from IPMA have issued a very interesting forecast for the last day of 2024. While Funchal will enjoy pleasant temperatures of 15–20°C, completely different conditions prevail in the mountains.
What You Need to Know
- Who this affects: Tourists planning a trip to Pico do Arieiro or Pico Ruivo.
- What this means in practice: At altitudes above 1600m, temperatures are approaching zero, and there is a real chance of snow showers. Roads leading to the summit may be slippery, and visibility could be reduced.
- Our recommendation: If you’re driving to the mountains, do not underestimate the need for proper clothing – a winter jacket is a must. Exercise extreme caution when driving. Your reward could be the unique sight of a “white Madeira,” a phenomenon not seen here every day.
Status of Hiking Routes and Trails
The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has updated the list of open and closed trails. Even on a holiday, safety comes first.
What You Need to Know
- Who this affects: Lovers of levada walks and mountain hiking.
- What this means in practice: The popular PR 10 Levada do Furado (Ribeiro Frio – Portela) is CLOSED due to a footpath collapse. The PR 3 Levada do Pico do Castelo is also inaccessible.
- Our recommendation: Do not take risks; avoid the closed trails. The main ridge trail, PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro, is open (reservations and a €3 fee required), but given the weather forecast, expect more challenging, slippery terrain.
Airport and Hotel Occupancy
The island is reporting record-high occupancy, surpassing even last year’s numbers. This is evident everywhere – from restaurants to the airport terminal.
What You Need to Know
- Who this affects: Travelers arriving or departing today, and those without dinner reservations.
- What this means in practice: Cristiano Ronaldo Airport is handling a high volume of flights, which may mean longer queues at security. Restaurants in Funchal are hopelessly full for the evening.
- Our recommendation: Arrive at the airport earlier than usual. If you don’t have a restaurant reservation, try your luck away from the main tourist hubs or stock up at a supermarket and enjoy a picnic with an ocean view.
