Trail Status and Mountain Conditions (May 23rd)

Today presents a significant challenge for hikers in the mountains. If you are heading to the highest peaks, please pay close attention to the following information.

Pico do Areeiro & PR1: Traffic Gridlock and Partial Closure

  • Who is affected: All tourists and drivers heading to Pico do Areeiro.
  • What this means: Since early morning, the access road to the peak has been congested and parking lots are full. Hundreds of people are causing traffic jams, making access to the trailhead extremely difficult. Furthermore, the most popular route, PR1 Vereda do Areeiro, is only partially open from this direction. You can only go 1.2 km to the Miradouro da Pedra Rija viewpoint. The path to Pico Ruivo from here is closed.
  • Our recommendation: Postpone your visit to Pico do Areeiro until late afternoon or choose an alternative route. To reach Pico Ruivo, use the fully open PR 1.2 trail from Achada do Teixeira.

Important: Mandatory Registration and Fee for Trail Access

We remind you that non-residents are required to pre-register and pay an access fee for selected hiking trails. This can be done online through the SIMplifica portal. Be sure to complete your registration in advance.

What to Do in Funchal Today? Festivals, Museums, and Music

While the mountains are busy, Funchal offers a rich and relaxed program. It’s the perfect day to explore the capital city.

  • Taste Wine and Local Cuisine: From 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM, the ‘Bailinho dos Vinhões’ wine festival takes place in the Old Town (Zona Velha), specifically in the Barreirinha area. Expect over 20 Portuguese winemakers, great food, and music by the ocean.
  • Visit the Electricity Museum for Free: In celebration of International Museum Day, admission to Casa da Luz is free today. At 3:00 PM, there will be a screening of a documentary about the history and construction of Madeira’s levadas – a great way to escape the sun and learn something new.
  • Explore the Port with Sailors: As part of Navy Day celebrations, an “Open Day” is being held at the Cais de São Lázaro pier from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM. You can try various maritime activities or take a boat ride. Perfect for families with children.
  • Enjoy Evening Music: Funchal offers two musical experiences tonight. The Capoeira Lounge Bar will host a Joe Cocker tribute starting at 9:00 PM, while the ‘Atlântida’ wind quintet will perform a classical repertoire at the chapel of the Princesa Dona Maria Amélia Foundation.

Practical Tip: Water Safety

If you’re shopping at the Forum Madeira shopping center, you might come across a safety event focused on drowning prevention and first aid for children (at 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM). Although it’s a local event, it’s a good opportunity to review the principles of safe swimming in the ocean.
