Traffic and Safety: What to Watch Out for Today
The weekend in Madeira is in full swing, but it also brings a few important warnings to help you plan a safe and smooth day. Today, we’re focusing on the north coast and traffic in Funchal.
Dangerous Rockfall on the North Coast near Seixal
- Who is affected? All drivers heading to the north coast today, especially in the Seixal and Porto Moniz areas.
- What does this mean? A new rockfall has been reported on the expressway near Seixal. The cliffs in this area are unstable, and there is a risk of further falling rocks, especially after recent weather changes.
- What do we recommend? Drive with extreme caution and reduce your speed when passing through this area. Keep your eyes on the road, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, and obey any temporary traffic signs. Never park under unsecured rock faces.
A Word of Caution for Motorcyclists and Scooter Riders
- Who is affected? Travelers renting a motorcycle or scooter on the island.
- What does this mean? Madeira’s terrain is challenging: steep ascents and descents, sharp turns, and very short on-ramps for the VR1 expressway can be treacherous for less experienced riders.
- What do we recommend? If you are not confident in your ability to handle a two-wheeled vehicle in mountainous terrain, consider renting a small car instead. If you do opt for a motorbike, ride with maximum vigilance.
Status of Hiking Trails and Levadas
Before any hike, it is crucial to check the current status of the trails. The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has reported several important restrictions today.
Overview of Closed Trails
Due to landslides and damage, the following popular trails remain strictly closed:
- PR 10 Levada do Furado (Ribeiro Frio – Portela)
- PR 9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde
- PR 7 Levada do Moinho
- PR 20 Vereda do Jardim do Mar
- PR 3 (on the island of Porto Santo)
Our advice: Ignoring the entry ban on these trails is extremely dangerous. Please choose from the many other open and safe alternatives available.
Restrictions on the PR 1 Ridge Trail (Pico do Arieiro – Pico Ruivo)
The iconic ridge trail is passable, but with an important restriction. The section from Pico do Arieiro towards Pico Ruivo is one-way only. To return from Pico Ruivo, you must take the PR 1.2 trail to the Achada do Teixeira car park.
Tips for Today’s Experiences and Activities
We also have some tips on how to make the most of your day on the island, whether you’re looking for peace, great food, or entertainment.
Mountain Food Festival: Trout and Cider in São Roque do Faial
An excellent choice for this afternoon is the 15th annual Trout and Cider Festival in São Roque do Faial (in the Santana area). You can expect fresh fish from local farms, tastings of the renowned apple cider, and an authentic atmosphere with folk music. It’s the perfect escape from the busy coast.
Funchal: More Crowds Downtown and a Swimming Tip
A cruise ship with over a thousand passengers has arrived in Funchal’s port today. Therefore, expect larger crowds in the city center, near the Monte cable car, and in restaurants. If you’re planning to have lunch, we recommend booking a table in advance.
If you plan to swim in the Lido area, avoid the public pebble beach Praia do Gorgulho, which has been reported as poorly maintained. For a clean and safe swim, it’s better to use the nearby paid swimming complexes like Complexo Balnear do Lido or Ponta Gorda.
New App “Lokaly”: Discover Madeira Like a Local
A new mobile app, Lokaly (www.golokaly.com), has been launched to connect travelers with authentic experiences and family-run businesses. If you’re looking for tips on hidden restaurants, artisan workshops, or community events off the main tourist track, this app is a great tool.
