Weather and Mountain Safety: Stay Safe Today
Madeira is experiencing its fifth day of severe weather. An orange alert for heavy rain and strong winds is in effect, significantly increasing the risks for outdoor activities. The situation is particularly dangerous in the mountainous regions.
Extreme Conditions at Pico do Areeiro
- Who it affects: All tourists heading to the central mountain massif.
- What it means: Rainfall recorded at the summit of Pico do Areeiro has far exceeded the limits for the highest (red) warning level. There is a high risk of landslides, falling rocks, zero visibility, and powerful winds. Access roads may be impassable.
- What we recommend: Cancel any plans to visit Pico do Areeiro and hike to Pico Ruivo (PR1) today. This is a life-threatening situation. Also, avoid coastal promenades due to high waves.
Status of Hiking Trails and Levadas
Due to the weather, many official hiking trails (PR) are temporarily closed. Entering closed paths is dangerous and may result in a fine.
Specific Closures and General Recommendations
- Who it affects: All hikers.
- What it means: The authorities (IFCN) have confirmed the closure of several popular trails. These primarily include:
- PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro
- PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada
- PR 9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde
- PR 10 Levada do Furado
The official recommendation is to avoid all trails above 1,000 meters in elevation today.
- What we recommend: Respect all signage and do not enter closed trails. Conditions can change, so always check the official website ifcn.madeira.gov.pt for the latest updates.
Tip: Paying for Trail Access
The new reservation and payment system for access to some trails, such as Ponta de São Lourenço (PR8), can be problematic. Mobile signal is often weak on-site, making online payments impossible. If the weather improves and you plan to go, make your reservation and payment in advance from your hotel using a Wi-Fi connection.
Transportation and Activities in the Cities
Even though the weather isn’t suitable for hiking, the cities offer plenty of alternatives. However, be aware of a few operational changes.
Funchal Cable Car is Out of Service
- Who it affects: Tourists planning to visit the Monte district in Funchal.
- What it means: The main Funchal – Monte cable car is closed for scheduled maintenance until April 2026.
- What we recommend: To get to Monte, use alternative transportation: the shuttle bus, public bus lines (Horários do Funchal), or a taxi/Bolt. The journey will take longer.
Tips for a Rainy Day Itinerary
- For families with children: The “Fado Funchal” festival is offering a special performance for children today. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy authentic culture while staying dry.
- Evening safety: In the fishing town of Câmara de Lobos, night watchmen are now on patrol, increasing the sense of security for evening visits to local bars and restaurants.
- Other ideas: Visit museums (CR7, Madeira Story Centre), the Mercado dos Lavradores market, or go for a Madeira wine tasting at Blandy’s Wine Lodge.
