Personal hike notes

The first half of this trail follows one of the longest and most modern levadas on the island. Levada do Norte stretches across nearly the entire southern part of Madeira and is, for the most part, wide and easy to walk. The second half takes you through the forest, where you can enjoy shade and lush greenery.

The trail starts and ends right at the parking lot, so logistics are simple. The easiest way to get there is by car. However, if that’s not an option, you can also reach it by bus. Line 7 runs from Funchal, and you can get off at the Cruz da Caldeira stop. And if you’d like to sweeten your trip a little, don’t miss the fantastic poncha bar Venda do André, located just nearby. The local poncha is definitely worth tasting!

We had a bit of bad weather on the trail, but generally, this route is a great choice when the weather in the mountains isn’t ideal. It sits at a lower elevation on the southern side of the island, where the chance of rain is relatively low.
