Personal hike notes

If you squint and overlook the hill in the middle—the PR5 climb—the whole circuit is practically flat, a small miracle by Madeira standards.

The walk kicks off in Ribeira Seca, where you can leave the car in a free car park. A brief ascent between cottages and plantations links you to the Levada do Caniçal; the irrigation channel’s cool breath and terraced views toward Machico greet you immediately.

Leaving the levada, you step onto the PR5 Vereda das Funduras and into the fragrance of ancient laurel forest. A broad, gentle rise leads to Casa das Funduras, where benches and a drinking‑water tap invite a pause. From there the path levels out, then drops toward Miradouro do Teleférico, serving up sweeping vistas and the rusting hulk of an old sugar‑cane cableway.

Next comes the show‑stopper: the Larano Trail, a slender ribbon clinging to sheer cliffs—equal parts breathtaking and adrenaline‑pumping. The Atlantic yawns beneath your boots, and every bend reveals a new cinematic angle. Boca do Risco is the perfect snack stop, boasting one of the northeast coast’s finest panoramas.

The final stage follows Vereda da Boca do Risco through eucalyptus stands back to Ribeira Seca, a tranquil descent and your last chance to admire the terrain you’ve conquered.

Pack sturdy boots, ample water, and food, and brace for the often fierce cliff‑top wind. For maximum payoff, set out at first light—the sunrise over the Atlantic is pure magic.
