Trail describtion:
This route offers a unique blend of nature and architecture, particularly in its first section where the trail passes under the imposing João Gomes Bridge and briefly runs alongside the Monte – Botanical Garden cable car route. It is one of the less frequented trails, especially in its first half, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a quieter day in nature.
Given its length and elevation gain, it is ideal for moderately experienced hikers looking to enjoy beautiful views of Funchal, the surrounding mountains, waterfalls, and a wide variety of exotic plants.

The length of the trail is 7.9 km (4.9 miles) and journey will take you around 02:30 hours. The elevation on the trail is 430 m. The highest point on the trail is 617 m and the lowest 184 m.

Personal hike notes
This route offers a peaceful, less crowded setting where you can enjoy the beauty of nature undisturbed. Along the way, you’ll encounter diverse vegetation – cacti, lichen, monsteras, and many others.
The path runs along a levee, so in some places it may be uneven or have puddles. Occasionally, you’ll need to cross a gentle stream that intersects the route, which proper hiking shoes should easily handle.
We recommend bringing an extra layer of clothing – it can be chilly under the rocks even in warm weather.
A major advantage of this trail is its close proximity to Funchal. If you’re staying here and have access to a car, you’re in luck – the trail begins right at the parking lot. There’s also the CAM Meio Papagaios bus stop nearby, served by buses 29, 31, and 31A. If you’re staying in Funchal and have extra energy, you can even walk to the trail’s start.
There are no refreshment options along the trail, and since it’s a longer route, consider packing your own food. At the end of the trail, you’ll find a small shop.
And if you still have some energy left, you can finish your hike with a visit to the famous botanical garden, right at its entrance where the trail ends.
