Personal hike notes

Your adventure starts in the Fanal forest, located in the northwest of Madeira, about an hour’s drive from Funchal via the ER209 road. Fanal is known for its centuries-old laurels with fantastically shaped trunks and branches, giving the place a storybook charm. The frequent mist only adds to the forest’s ethereal appeal, making it an ideal spot for unforgettable photos.

From the small parking area near Fanal, you can first wander through the forest or head straight to the trail. After a longer descent down wooden steps, you’ll join PR14 – one of Madeira’s most picturesque levadas. Turn left when you reach the levada to find one of the largest waterfalls along the route.

Levada dos Cedros, a historic irrigation channel from the 17th century, winds its way through the thick Laurisilva forest. The trail is about 7.2 km long and follows a narrow path lined with moss and ferns, guiding you away from the tourist crowds and into the island’s green heart.

Along the way, you’ll come across lovely surprises – small waterfalls offering great rest spots and panoramic viewpoints over deep valleys and toward the coast, such as Ribeira da Janela. While the route is generally easy, it requires caution in wet conditions, as some parts can be slippery.

At the end of the levada in the Curral Falso area, you return to Fanal via a marked path, this time through more open terrain with occasional climbs. The way back offers a new perspective – open pastures, sweeping views, and a return to the mystical forest, which will once again wrap you in its signature misty embrace.

The best time to visit is in spring or autumn, when temperatures are pleasant and the forest is at its most vibrant. Set out early in the morning or late in the afternoon to fully experience Fanal’s iconic foggy atmosphere.

Sturdy, waterproof hiking shoes are a must. We also recommend layered clothing suitable for humid conditions, plenty of water, a snack, and phone with GPS maps. And don’t forget your camera – the atmosphere of Fanal and Levada dos Cedros is truly one of a kind.
