Trail describtion:

The PR8 Furado trail at the easternmost tip of Madeira offers a unique hiking experience that contrasts with the lush landscape of the island. The trail starts at the car park and is well signposted and accessible. The trail winds through rugged rocky terrain with hills and dramatic outcrops. Along the way, hikers are treated to breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, seahorse-shaped rock formations and the distant Desertas Islands.

Despite its popularity and relatively easy initial sections, the trail becomes more challenging as it nears Morro do Furado. The final ascent is steep and slippery, requiring careful footing. However, those who reach the summit are rewarded with unparalleled 360-degree views of the ocean and rugged coastline. This mix of accessible beauty and a touch of adventure makes the PR8 Furado Trail a must-visit, offering a memorable journey through one of Madeira’s most distinctive and picturesque landscapes.

Personal hike notes

Embarking on the PR8 Furado Trail, you’ll find that this is the longest variant of the hike available in the area. While the entire trail is a rewarding journey, there are several options to shorten it if you prefer. One can completely skip the left spur and the Pico das Pedras Brancas viewpoint, which offers a more direct route. Sticking strictly to the PR8 route, the hike covers a distance of just 6.4 kilometers, making it a manageable trek for most hikers.

Given the trail’s simplicity and popularity, it’s often crowded, particularly during favorable weather and peak tourist seasons. To enjoy a more tranquil experience, I recommend starting your hike early in the morning or late in the afternoon. During midday, the parking lot fills up quickly, and the trail can become quite congested with other walkers.

As you progress eastward along the trail, you’ll notice that the number of people you encounter decreases significantly. Around Casa do Sardinha, hikers tend to spread out, making the path more enjoyable and less crowded. However, be aware that the Casa do Sardinha café operates only during the summer season from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. If you’re hiking outside of this period, make sure to bring enough water, as the café will be closed.

At the parking area, you will typically find one or two food stalls offering refreshments. While convenient, the prices at these stalls are slightly higher than what you might find elsewhere on Madeira. It’s a small price to pay for convenience, but worth noting for those who are budget-conscious.
