For Trail and Levada Lovers
PR10 Levada do Furado Finally Reopens
The best news for all tourists and lovers of Madeiran nature: after extensive renovations that lasted several months, the iconic PR 10 Levada do Furado (Ribeiro Frio – Portela) trail is once again fully accessible. You can now embark on one of the most beautiful walks through the Laurissilva forest (a UNESCO World Heritage site).
- Who is this for? All hikers and tourists planning walking trips.
- What does this mean? One of the island’s top trails is available again. However, remember the requirement to register and potentially pay an entry fee for non-residents via the Simplifica portal.
- Our recommendation? Take advantage of this opportunity! But don’t forget that some other trails, like PR 7 (Levada do Moinho) or PR 1.3 (Vereda da Encumeada), remain partially closed. Always check the current status on the official IFCN website.
Weather Warning for the Mountains
Forecasters are reporting variable cloudiness and a chance of light showers today, especially on the north coast and in the interior. Even if it’s sunny by the sea in the south, be prepared in the mountains.
- Who is this for? Hikers heading for mountain trails (Pico do Areeiro, Pico Ruivo) and the north of the island.
- What does this mean? Trails can be slippery after rain, and visibility can change rapidly.
- Our recommendation? Pack a waterproof jacket and wear sturdy, non-slip footwear. Be careful.
What’s Happening in Funchal?
Traffic Restrictions on Caminho das Virtudes
If you’re driving in Funchal, avoid Caminho das Virtudes in the western part of the city. Due to construction work, traffic has been reduced to a single lane, causing long queues.
- Who is this for? Drivers, as well as taxi and Bolt users.
- What does this mean? You can expect significant delays.
- Our recommendation? Use the VR1 highway bypass or other city routes instead.
Evening Events and a Culinary Tip
Today offers two interesting opportunities. For motorsport fans, there’s a public autograph session with the drivers of the Rali Vinho da Madeira at Casino da Madeira from 21:30 to 23:00. Expect larger crowds in the area. And for food lovers, we have great news: after extensive renovations, the legendary Chalet Vicente restaurant on Estrada Monumental reopens today at 16:00, offering a unique atmosphere in a historic 19th-century building.
Practical Tips for the Coming Days
Planning a Trip to Porto Santo?
Porto Santo Line is adding extra ferry services between Funchal and the neighboring island for August. Specifically, on Wednesdays, August 12th and 26th, in addition to the 8:00 morning ferry, there will be a new afternoon departure from Funchal at 16:00. This gives you more flexibility for a day trip. However, be sure to buy your tickets well in advance, as they sell out quickly.
Festival Cancelled
If you were planning to attend the Festa da Gratidão charity event in Funchal on Saturday, August 1st, please be aware that it has been postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. A new date will be announced later.
A Tip for Birdwatchers
To mark Nature Protection Day, a new digital platform and book called Sentinelas do Oceano (Sentinels of the Ocean) has been launched, which maps the presence of seabirds. It’s an excellent resource for anyone interested in birdwatching in Madeira.
