Major Transportation News: Unlimited Bus Travel Across the Island

As of today, public transportation has become significantly simpler. The SIGA network, which brings together the main bus companies (Horários do Funchal, Rodoeste, CAM), has introduced new tourist passes.

What Does This Mean in Practice?

  • Who it’s for: Ideal for anyone who doesn’t want to rent a car and plans to explore different parts of the island.
  • How it works: You can buy a time-based pass for 1, 2, 3, 5, or 7 days. It allows for unlimited travel across the entire island, including the popular Aerobus line from the airport.
  • Recommendation: Passes are available at SIGA points of sale or through the Payshop network. It’s more convenient and often cheaper than paying the driver for each individual ride.

Mountain Trail Status: Warning, the Pico to Pico Hike is Impassable

The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has updated the status of hiking trails. If you are planning a hike in the highest parts of the island, pay close attention to this information.

PR1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico to Pico)

  • Current Status: The trail is only partially open. From the summit of Pico do Areeiro, you can only reach the Ninho da Manta viewpoint (approx. 1.2 km). The full traverse to Pico Ruivo is not possible.
  • Recommendation: If you want to see both peaks, plan two separate trips. Drive to Pico do Areeiro for sunrise and the views. Then, drive to the Achada do Teixeira car park, from where the easy and open PR1.2 trail leads to the summit of Pico Ruivo. Don’t forget the mandatory online reservation and the €3 fee to access PR1.

Other Closed Trails

The following popular trails are currently completely closed:

  • PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada
  • PR 7 Levada do Moinho
  • PR 10 Levada do Furado
  • PR 20 Vereda do Jardim do Mar

Our advice: Before every hike, check the current status on the official IFCN website or their mobile app. As an alternative, we recommend open trails in the Rabaçal area, such as Levada do Alecrim (PR 6.2).

Weather and Safety: Strong Swells on the Coast

The Funchal Port Authority has issued a warning for strong swells. This primarily affects activities by the sea.

  • Who this affects: Anyone on the coast, planning a boat trip, or intending to swim.
  • What this means: Whale and dolphin watching boat trips may be canceled. Swimming at unprotected beaches (especially on the north coast) is dangerous.
  • Recommendation: Avoid walking on piers and breakwaters. If you have a boat trip booked, confirm with the operator whether it is still going ahead.

Day Trip Tip: Living Traditions in Santana

If you’re heading to Santana today to admire the typical triangular houses, you’re in for an extra treat. The village is hosting a cultural event focused on preserving local traditions. It’s a great opportunity to see local folklore groups in traditional costumes and experience the island’s authentic atmosphere.
