Weather and Safety: Winter Conditions in the Mountains

Friday’s weather brings a significant drop in temperature to Madeira, with strong northeasterly winds gusting up to 60 km/h and, most notably, the possibility of snow on the highest peaks. This has a major impact on planning any excursions.

  • Who is affected: All tourists heading to Pico do Areeiro, Pico Ruivo, and other high-altitude ridge hikes.
  • What this means in practice: The road to Pico do Areeiro may be icy or completely closed by the police. Ridge traverses are extremely dangerous today due to high winds, low visibility, and the risk of icy patches.
  • Recommendation: Avoid the mountain peaks entirely today. Do not take risks and save your hike for better weather.

Trail Status: PR1 is Off-Limits Today

The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) is warning against using certain trails. The most important restriction affects the most popular trek.

  • Key Information: The PR1 Vereda do Areeiro trail (between Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo) is considered inaccessible and dangerous today.
  • Hiking Alternatives: If you still want to hike, choose safer, lower-elevation levadas on the southern, leeward side of the island. Good options include Levada do Norte or Levada dos Piornais. However, expect wet and slippery conditions even on these trails.

North Coast and Transportation

The adverse weather is also affecting lower elevations, particularly on the north of the island and at the airport.

High Waves on the North Coast

  • Who is affected: Visitors to the north coast (Porto Moniz, Seixal, São Jorge).
  • What this means in practice: The coast is being battered by waves of 3.5 to 4.5 meters. Swimming in the natural pools is impossible and dangerous today. Be extremely cautious even when walking near the ocean.
  • Recommendation: Enjoy the view of the wild ocean from a safe distance, for example, from the Véu da Noiva viewpoint.

Airport Operations

  • Who is affected: Passengers arriving at or departing from Cristiano Ronaldo Airport (FNC) today.
  • What this means in practice: Strong wind gusts may cause flight delays or holding patterns for landing aircraft. Expect potential turbulence.
  • Recommendation: Check the current status of your flight on the airport website (ANA Aeroportos) or your airline’s app.

Our Tips for Today: Where to Go Instead of the Mountains

Bad weather in the mountains doesn’t have to ruin your day. Madeira offers plenty of indoor or more sheltered alternatives:

  • Culture and Gastronomy in Funchal: Visit museums like the CR7 Museum or the Madeira Story Centre. Go for a Madeira wine tasting at Blandy’s Wine Lodge, or explore the Mercado dos Lavradores market.
  • A Trip to the South: The weather on the south coast will be significantly more pleasant. Head to the picturesque fishing town of Câmara de Lobos to try the famous “poncha”.
  • Cultural Experience: Today, a Lenten Friday, is steeped in tradition. In many towns and villages, including Funchal, you may come across a Procession of the Stations of the Cross (Via Sacra). It’s a unique opportunity to experience the authentic side of the island.
