Main Update: Airport Paralyzed by Wind
The most important information for all travelers is the current situation at Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport (FNC). Due to strong winds, with gusts reaching up to 110 km/h, approximately 40 arrivals and departures have been canceled since yesterday. The problems affect connections from many European cities, including Lisbon, London, and Munich.
- Who is affected: Passengers arriving in or departing from Madeira today.
- What this means in practice: Expect significant delays, flight diversions (often to the island of Porto Santo), or complete cancellations.
- Recommendation: Do not travel to the airport without checking first. Check the status of your flight immediately with your airline or on the airport’s website. Stay in contact with your airline for further instructions.
Trail Conditions and Safety on the Ground
The adverse weather is significantly impacting hiking conditions, especially at higher altitudes. The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) reports the following restrictions.
Mountain Crossings and Ridge Trails
Today is not suitable for high-altitude hiking. Strong winds and rain make movement on the ridges extremely dangerous.
- PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Areeiro ↔ Pico Ruivo): The trail is only passable for a short section from the Pico do Areeiro car park to the Ninho da Manta viewpoint. The crossing to Pico Ruivo is closed and life-threatening.
- PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada: This trail is completely closed.
Closed and Restricted Levadas
Some popular levadas are also affected, with risks of falling branches or landslides.
- PR 10 Levada do Furado: Closed due to a landslide.
- PR 7 Levada do Moinho: Closed.
- PR 6 Levada das 25 Fontes: Caution, the bypass section of the trail is closed. This means the main tunnel is open to two-way traffic, which may lead to congestion and longer waits.
Recommendation: Avoid all ridge hikes today. If you still decide to attempt an easy, low-altitude levada, be extremely cautious and monitor the latest weather forecast. It is better to consider an alternative plan for the day.
Other Warnings and Practical Information
Dangerous Waves on the Coast
The Port Authority has issued an orange warning for strong waves for both the north and south coasts. Swimming in the sea today is extremely dangerous and strongly discouraged. Be careful even on coastal promenades, where unexpectedly large waves can crash ashore.
Road Traffic and Local Restrictions
Traffic jams are reported on major routes, especially on the VR1 expressway around Funchal (in the Cancela and Câmara de Lobos areas). Allow for an extra 30-45 minutes if you are heading to the airport or traveling to the west of the island.
Despite the rain, two local fires from previous days are also reported in the areas of Faial (Santana) and Eira do Mourão (between Ribeira Brava and Serra de Água). Avoid these locations, as firefighters may be operating and roads may be temporarily closed.
Tip for Today
Given the conditions, today is the perfect day to explore Funchal. Visit one of the museums (e.g., CR7 Museum, Madeira Story Centre), taste Madeira wine at Blandy’s Wine Lodge, or use the time for shopping. It’s best to postpone outdoor activities until the forecast is more favorable.
