Weather: Clouds in the Mountains, Prepare for Heat on the Coast
Today, Monday, August 10th, is better suited for relaxing by the sea than for mountain hiking. Cloud cover persists over the mountains and the north coast, which may bring light showers and fog. Visibility on the ridges is reduced, and the terrain may be slippery. In contrast, the south coast offers more stable weather, with the sea at a pleasant 24–25 °C.
From today until Wednesday evening (August 12th), a yellow warning for high temperatures is in effect for the north and south coasts of Madeira and the island of Porto Santo. Temperatures by the sea will hover around 27 °C, but it may feel much hotter in sheltered valleys.
- Who is affected: All tourists, especially hikers and families with children.
- What this means in practice: Increased risk of heatstroke and dehydration. The heat and dry conditions also dramatically increase the risk of forest fires.
- Our recommendation: Plan strenuous hikes for the early morning or late afternoon. Avoid physical exertion during midday (between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM). Wear a hat, drink plenty of water, and under no circumstances light fires or use camping stoves in nature.
Hiking Trails (PR): Mandatory Online Reservations and One-Way Route on PR1
We remind you that a new system has been in effect for all official hiking trails (PR) since the beginning of the year. Do not set out on the trails without a valid online registration and paid fee, as you risk being fined.
- Who is affected: All non-resident hikers.
- What this means in practice: Before every hike on a marked trail, you must make a reservation through the SIMplifica portal. The fee is €4.50 per person for a standard trail and €10.50 for the PR1 Vereda do Areeiro ridge walk.
- Our recommendation: Plan ahead, especially for popular trails. Remember that the PR1 trail (Pico do Areeiro – Pico Ruivo) is one-way on the section from the Pedra Rija viewpoint to Pico Ruivo. You cannot return the same way. Therefore, you must arrange transportation in advance from the end of the trail at Achada do Teixeira (where the PR1.2 trail leads).
Transport & Events: Restrictions for Festa do Monte and Higher Airfares
In Funchal, preparations are underway for the Festa do Monte, the island’s largest popular festival, held from August 11th to 16th. At the same time, news arrives of an increase in flight prices from the mainland.
Festa do Monte in Funchal
- Who is affected: Visitors to Funchal, especially the Monte district, and drivers.
- What this means in practice: From Tuesday, August 11th, to Sunday, August 16th, expect extensive road closures and one-way street systems around Monte. The most significant restrictions are expected on Friday evening, August 14th, and during the procession on Saturday, August 15th.
- Our recommendation: Do not drive to the Monte area during these days. Use the enhanced public transport services instead.
Lisbon–Funchal Airfare Prices
- Who is affected: Travellers who are still planning their trip or combining a visit to Madeira with mainland Portugal.
- What this means in practice: Airfares on the Lisbon–Funchal route have increased by up to 34% year-over-year.
- Our recommendation: Book your flights as far in advance as possible and carefully compare prices between carriers like TAP, EasyJet, and Ryanair.
