Weather and Trip Tips: Sunny South, Cloudy North
Madeira is once again showcasing its typical microclimate today. While the southern coast, including Funchal, will enjoy a sunny day with temperatures around 25°C, the north and higher mountain areas (terras altas) will be under cloud cover with a chance of light showers, especially in the morning.
- Who does this affect? All tourists planning outdoor activities.
- What does this mean in practice? It’s an ideal day for swimming and beach activities in the south. The sea temperature is a pleasant 22–23°C. If you’re heading for mountain hikes or the north coast, be prepared for fog, lower visibility, and cooler weather.
- What do we recommend? For mountain hikes, pack a waterproof jacket and a warmer layer of clothing. In the south, don’t forget sunscreen and plenty of water.
Trail Status and Important Warnings
The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) reports several key facts that will affect your hiking plans. Most importantly, a fee of €4.50 has been introduced for non-residents to access selected PR trails, which must be paid online via the SIMplifica portal.
PR1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Areeiro – Pico Ruivo)
- Status: Open daily, but only the western route through the tunnels is passable.
- Warning: The eastern ridge route via Pico das Torres is permanently closed for safety reasons. Respect the entry ban; you risk heavy fines.
- Practical tip: Plan the route either as a return trip (back to Areeiro) or as a one-way hike with pre-arranged transport from the Achada do Teixeira car park below Pico Ruivo.
PR1.3 Vereda da Encumeada
- Status: Partially closed.
- Warning: The section between Pico Ruivo and Boca das Torrinhas is open and safe. However, the continuing section from Boca das Torrinhas towards the Encumeada pass is completely closed due to unstable terrain.
- Practical tip: Enjoy the hike from Ruivo to the Torrinhas viewpoint, but do not continue towards Encumeada.
Culture and Entertainment: Where to Go Tonight?
Whether you’re in the heart of the action in Funchal or enjoying the tranquility of the east, tonight offers some great music.
Funchal Jazz Festival in Santa Catarina Park
- What’s on? The main open-air part of the famous jazz festival begins. Tonight from 21:30, Portuguese vibraphonist Duarte Ventura and American star Joel Ross will perform.
- Who is it for? For lovers of music, summer vibes, and beautiful ocean views.
- Practical tip: The park is located in the center of Funchal. Due to the event’s high popularity, we recommend arriving early and expecting increased foot traffic in the area.
Retro Hits in Caniço-de-Baixo
- What’s on? At the Capoeira Lounge Bar (Sentido Galo Resort), the band Hot Stuff will be playing a free concert from 21:00, featuring the greatest hits of the ’70s and ’80s.
- Who is it for? Ideal for tourists staying in the Caniço area who don’t want to travel to Funchal for entertainment.
- Practical tip: The bar is located right by the ocean and offers a relaxed atmosphere. It’s easily accessible on foot from nearby hotels.
Weekend Tip and Future Outlook
Saturday: Experience the Traditional Wheat Threshing in Porto da Cruz
If you’re looking for an authentic experience, plan a trip to Porto da Cruz on the northeast coast this Saturday, July 11th. From 11:00, the traditional “Debulha do Trigo” (Wheat Threshing) festival will take place. You’ll see demonstrations of old farming techniques and experience a true Madeiran atmosphere. The event is free and ideal for families with children.
Heads Up: Madeira Wine Rally at the End of July/Beginning of August
Preparations are already underway for the legendary Madeira Wine Rally. If you plan to visit the island during this period, expect extensive road closures across the island. We strongly recommend booking your car and accommodation well in advance, as availability is often limited and prices are significantly higher.
