Funchal Under Pressure: Thousands of Cruise Ship Tourists
The massive cruise ship Ventura has docked in Funchal’s harbor today, bringing over 4,200 visitors to the island. This means one thing – the city center will be significantly busier than usual for most of the day.
Who is affected?
Anyone planning to visit the historic center of Funchal today.
What does this mean in practice?
- Larger crowds and queues: Expect them especially at the lower station of the Monte cable car, at the Mercado dos Lavradores market, in the botanical gardens, and along the Avenida do Mar seaside promenade.
- Fuller restaurants and cafés: Finding an available table in the city center may be more challenging.
Our Recommendation
If you want to avoid the crowds, visit the center of Funchal either early in the morning (before 10:00 AM) or later in the afternoon (after 4:00 PM). This is an ideal opportunity to explore the quieter areas in the west or east of the island today.
Weather and Safety: Damp Conditions in the Mountains and a North Coast Warning
Today’s weather forecast predicts heavy cloud cover with a chance of rain showers. These are expected mainly on the north coast and in higher altitudes, such as the areas around Pico do Areeiro, Pico Ruivo, or the Paúl da Serra plateau. Unfortunately, the importance of caution is highlighted by a helicopter rescue operation today for a hiker in distress in the exposed Lapas Pretas area (São Vicente).
Who is affected?
Hikers and trekkers heading to the levadas in the north (in the Santana and São Vicente areas) or on mountain hikes.
What does this mean in practice?
- Slippery trails: Dampness and rain make stones and dirt paths dangerously slippery.
- Reduced visibility: Dense fog can occur at higher altitudes, making navigation difficult.
Our Recommendation
Pack a waterproof jacket and wear sturdy, high-quality footwear with non-slip soles. Strictly stick to the marked trails (PRs) and do not venture onto unofficial or coastal paths. Check current conditions on webcams before you set out.
Current Trail Status: Restrictions on PR1 and PR1.3
The Madeira Forest and Nature Conservation Institute (IFCN) has issued a notice about current restrictions on the most famous mountain routes and reminds hikers of the mandatory registration for selected trails via the SIMplifica portal.
Who is affected?
Anyone planning a hike between the island’s highest peaks.
What are the current conditions?
- PR1 – Vereda do Areeiro: The trail is open in both directions only on the section between Pico do Areeiro and the Miradouro da Pedra Rija viewpoint. The connecting section via Pico das Torres to Pico Ruivo remains closed.
- PR1.3 – Vereda da Encumeada: The trail is only partially open, between Pico Ruivo and the Boca das Torrinhas pass. The section towards Encumeada is closed.
Our Recommendation
Always check the current status on the official IFCN website before your hike. Respect all signs and barriers on the trails. Entering closed sections is life-threatening.
