Hiking Trail Status: PR1 Open, PR10 Unrestricted
Good news for all mountain lovers. According to the latest information from the park authority (IFCN), the key high-altitude trail PR1 Vereda do Areeiro, connecting the peaks of Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo, is fully open today. The western route through the tunnels is passable. The eastern path via Pico das Torres remains closed for safety reasons.
Practical tips for hikers:
- Mandatory Registration: Don’t forget that to access PR1 and other selected trails, you must have a pre-purchased ticket and reservation through the SIMplifica portal.
- PR1.3 Encumeada: The section from Pico Ruivo towards Boca das Torrinhas is open. The connecting part from Torrinhas to Encumeada is still closed.
- PR10 Levada do Furado: This popular levada walk between Ribeiro Frio and Portela is fully operational again without any restrictions following maintenance.
Weather: Ideal for Swimming, Bring a Jacket for the Mountains
Madeira is experiencing typical autumn weather today. The south coast, including Funchal, Calheta, and Ponta do Sol, will be sunny with temperatures reaching up to 25°C. The sea is also exceptionally warm at up to 25°C, creating perfect conditions for swimming and water sports.
If you’re heading to the north of the island or into the mountains (Pico do Areeiro, Rabaçal), expect variable cloudiness and the chance of light, brief showers. Be sure to pack a light waterproof jacket. The wind will be gentle.
What’s Happening on the Island? Calm in Machico and Inspiration from Calheta
Funchal: A Stroll Along the Lido Promenade
Planning a walk along the coastal promenade, Passeio Público Marítimo, between the Lido area and Praia Formosa beach? The path is fully accessible, but be aware that some green sections are undergoing maintenance and don’t look as well-kept as usual. For a perfect showcase of Madeiran flora, we recommend visiting one of the botanical gardens above Funchal instead.
East and North of the Island: Races and Sports
In the area around Machico, calm has returned. The extreme trail race, Madeira Backyard Ultra, has finished, so all hiking trails and levadas in this area are freely accessible again without any restrictions.
On the north coast, in Porto Moniz, preparations are underway for the Rampa Regional hill climb motor race. Expect increased traffic and possible short-term closures of some mountain roads around the town in the coming days.
The ocean around Madeira offers excellent conditions, as confirmed by the new world champion in ocean canoeing from Calheta. If you’re tempted by kayaking or paddleboarding, now is the perfect time to try it under the guidance of local professionals.
