Trail Status: Closure Alert
Due to the effects of adverse weather, the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has restricted access to several popular hiking trails today. Always check the current status before planning your trip—safety comes first.
Partially Closed Trails
- PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro: The most famous ridge walk is accessible ONLY on the section from the Pico do Areeiro car park to the Ninho da Manta / Pedra Rija viewpoint (approx. 1.2 km). The full hike to Pico Ruivo is not possible!
- PR 2 Vereda do Urzal: Passable only for the first 6.2 km.
Fully Closed Trails
- PR 9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde
- PR 10 Levada do Furado (Ribeiro Frio – Portela)
- PR 7 Levada do Moinho
- PR 16 Levada Fajã do Rodrigues
- PR 20 Vereda do Jardim do Mar
Good news: The PR 5 Vereda das Funduras trail is fully open again after maintenance.
Don’t forget: Since the beginning of the year, mandatory registration and a fee via the SIMplifica portal are required for entry to selected trails. This also applies to the open sections of PR1.
Weather, Roads, and Peace of Mind
Weather Favors the South
Today’s forecast calls for increased cloud cover with light showers, especially on the north coast and in the island’s interior. Temperatures in Funchal will hover around a pleasant 20°C. It’s not an ideal day for sunbathing, but the south of the island offers more stable conditions for other activities.
Drivers, Beware of Falling Rocks
Due to the recent rainy days, there is an increased risk of rockfalls, particularly on secondary roads in the São Vicente and Porto Moniz areas. Drive carefully and avoid parking under rock overhangs.
For Your Peace of Mind: Minor Tremor
A very minor earthquake was recorded south of the island during the night. It was not felt and had no impact on safety. We are mentioning this only for your complete information, in case you hear about it.
Our Recommendations for Today
We suggest skipping the mountains today. The experience wouldn’t be ideal in this weather. We have a few tips for an excellent Plan B:
- Urban Culture: Explore the historic center of Funchal, visit the famous Mercado dos Lavradores market, or delve into the history of Madeira wine at Blandy’s Wine Lodge.
- Gardens and Parks: Even on a cloudy day, the Monte Palace or the Botanical Garden are stunning and often less crowded than in full sun.
- Underground Adventure: The Volcanic Caves in São Vicente are an excellent choice in any weather. The entire tour is indoors.
- Coastal Strolls: Enjoy the atmosphere on the promenades in Funchal, Câmara de Lobos, or Ponta do Sol, where the weather is generally better.
