Weather and Day Trip Tips: Where to Go Today?
Today’s weather is best on the south coast. Around Funchal and in the south of the island, expect partly cloudy to clear skies with temperatures around 26°C, perfect for swimming and relaxing by the sea. The water temperature is a pleasant 23–24°C. In contrast, the northern coast and higher elevations may experience cloud cover with a chance of isolated showers. If you’re planning a mountain hike, such as the ridge trail from Pico do Areeiro, start as early as possible and pack a windbreaker. In the mountains and on the eastern and western tips of the island, wind gusts can reach up to 40 km/h.
Trail and Levada Status: Great News and New Rules
The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has important updates for all hiking enthusiasts. Before you head out, be aware of the new rules that apply to the official PR trails.
- Mandatory Registration and Fee: Before entering most licensed trails (PR), you must register through the SIMplifica portal and pay a fee of €4.50. Reservations are made for a specific half-hour time slot.
- PR 10 Levada do Furado is Open: Great news! This popular route from Ribeiro Frio to Portela is fully accessible and safe again after reconstruction.
- PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro (Areeiro → Ruivo): Madeira’s most famous ridge walk is now officially one-way. Plan your return logistics from Pico Ruivo carefully, for example, by booking a taxi from the Achada do Teixeira car park.
- PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada: The 3.9 km section between Pico Ruivo and Boca das Torrinhas is passable.
Recommendation: Always check the current status of your trail on the official Madeira Trail Status (IFCN) website before your hike.
Transport: Easier to Porto Santo, Trickier to Porto Moniz
Extra Ferries to Porto Santo
Want to spend a day on the nine-kilometre golden beach? Today is the perfect chance. Porto Santo Line has added extra sailings for the “Lobo Marinho” ferry.
- From Funchal to Porto Santo: In addition to the 19:00 evening service, there is also a morning service at 08:00.
- From Porto Santo to Funchal: In addition to the 22:30 night service, a midday service has been added at 12:00.
What does this mean in practice? You can take a great one-day trip. However, due to the high season, the ferries are practically sold out. If you’re interested, book your tickets online immediately.
Porto Moniz Festival and Traffic Complications
The Semana do Mar (Sea Week) festival is culminating today on the north side of the island. Popular Portuguese singer Diogo Piçarra will be performing this evening. The event promises a fantastic atmosphere, music, and cuisine. However, be prepared for extremely large crowds.
Recommendation: If you are heading to Porto Moniz, leave early in the afternoon. Combine your visit with a swim in the lava pools and, most importantly, secure a parking spot early. After 18:00, parking in the centre will be nearly impossible.
Practical Info for Drivers: Drive Carefully
Police statistics from last week report 78 traffic accidents. Madeira’s roads are unique – narrow, steep, full of curves, and can be slippery after rain or morning dew.
