Weather: Dangerous Conditions in the Mountains, Ideal for Swimming in the South
Two conflicting weather phenomena are affecting Madeira today. The most significant is a yellow warning for thunderstorms, in effect until 20:00 (19:00 UTC) today. It primarily concerns the mountainous regions and the western part of the island. Expect lightning, localized torrential rain, and wind gusts of up to 70 km/h.
- Who is affected: All tourists planning trips to the mountains and the west of the island.
- What this means in practice: The combination of lightning, rain, and wind on mountain ridges (e.g., the PR1 Pico do Areeiro – Pico Ruivo trail) is life-threatening. There is also a risk of landslides and flash floods in the levada valleys.
- What we recommend: We strongly advise against undertaking any high-altitude hikes this afternoon. Cancel your plans and stay safe at lower elevations.
Simultaneously, a high-temperature warning is in effect for the entire archipelago until tomorrow evening, with temperatures potentially reaching up to 30°C in the south. The sea temperature is a pleasant 24-25°C and the waters are calm on the southern coast, making the weather ideal for swimming and beach activities. The good news is that the recent forest fires near Ribeira Brava and Machico have been completely extinguished, and the areas are now safe.
Trail and Levada Status: Mandatory Fees and Restrictions on PR1
If you are planning hikes for the coming days, remember two important things. Firstly, non-residents are now required to purchase an online permit for the marked PR trails. Secondly, always check the current status of the trails on the IFCN website (madeira.gov.pt) beforehand.
- Who is affected: Anyone planning to hike the marked trails (PR).
- What this means in practice: The iconic PR1 Vereda do Areeiro trail is currently only open on the section from Pico do Areeiro to the Miradouro da Pedra Rija viewpoint. The traverse via Pico das Torres to Pico Ruivo is closed.
- What we recommend: For today, all mountain trails are strictly off-limits due to the thunderstorms. For the coming days, don’t forget to purchase your permit via the SIMplifica portal and check which sections are open.
Transportation and Practical Information
Beware of Traffic Jams on the Via Rápida
A car breakdown on the main Via Rápida highway this morning highlighted how vulnerable the island’s traffic system is. If you are traveling to the airport by rental car today, leave with plenty of extra time to avoid unnecessary stress.
Water Outage in Funchal
If you are staying in private accommodation (Airbnb) in the northern part of Funchal, in the Caminho do Lombo area, expect a water outage until approximately 18:00 today due to urgent repairs. The affected streets include Caminho do Lombo, Estrada Luso Brasileira, Rua Dom Ernesto Sena de Oliveira, and the surrounding area. We recommend buying bottled water.
Porto Santo: Supermarket Back in Operation
For travelers on the neighboring island of Porto Santo, we have good news: the popular Pingo Doce supermarket in the town center has reopened after a technical shutdown.
Evening Tips for Funchal: Two Great Free Events
A change of plans due to the weather doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Funchal is offering two enticing cultural events this evening, both with free admission.
- Military Band and Jazz Orchestra Concert: At 21:00, a unique fusion of two musical worlds begins at the RG3 military regiment grounds. Expect an unforgettable atmosphere.
- FRACTAL Festival: The 8th edition of the modern art festival kicks off today. The opening meet-and-greet with the artists will take place from 19:00 at the Capela da Nazaré chapel. It’s a great opportunity to experience a different side of Funchal.
And if you prefer absolute relaxation, the Laurea Spa at the Savoy Palace hotel has just won the “Best Hotel Spa in Portugal” award. An ideal escape from the heat or the storm.
