Funchal: Sports, Protests, and Culture in the City Center
EcoTrail Race and Demonstration in the Center
Who this affects: All visitors to central Funchal, hikers in the mountains above the city, and drivers.
What it means: Expect temporary road closures and larger crowds in the center of Funchal today (especially on Avenida Arriaga and the Rua Dr. Fernão Ornelas shopping street). The reason is the finish of the international mountain race EcoTrail Funchal and a morning demonstration. You may encounter hundreds of competitors on the mountain trails around Funchal.
Our recommendation: If you plan to visit the city center, go either early in the morning or after 1:00 PM. For car travel, use the bypass roads. On the trails, please be considerate of the runners.
Tip: Discover Traditional Madeiran Culture
Who it’s for: Lovers of history, crafts, and music.
What it is: In the historic Torre do Capitão building (Santo Amaro), a program for the International Day of Intangible Cultural Heritage is taking place this morning (10:00 AM–1:00 PM). You can look forward to live traditional music and a talk about Madeiran mosaic paving.
Our recommendation: An ideal opportunity to enrich your morning in Funchal and get a glimpse into local culture.
Porto Moniz: Road Closures Due to Car Race
Who this affects: All drivers and tourists heading to the north coast, especially to Porto Moniz.
What it means: The Rampa Regional do Porto Moniz hill climb race is taking place in Porto Moniz throughout the day. For this reason, the ER101 road is completely closed on the section between the town center and the Santa area. Expect increased noise and traffic restrictions in the area.
Our recommendation: To reach the lava pools in Porto Moniz, use alternative routes, for example, via São Vicente or from the Paúl da Serra plateau. This will help you avoid long waits and road closures.
Mountain Update: Trail Status and Mandatory Fees
Who this affects: All hikers, especially those planning the trek between the highest peaks.
What it means: The main mountain routes are open, but with certain conditions.
- PR1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Arieiro ↔ Pico Ruivo): The trail is passable only via the western route through the tunnels. The eastern path around Pico das Torres is permanently closed for safety reasons.
- PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada: Only the section between Pico Ruivo and Boca das Torrinhas is open.
Our recommendation: Always check the current trail status on the official IFCN website or in their app before you hike. Remember that for access to paid trails (including PR1), you must register in advance and pay the fee via the SIMplifica portal.
Where to Go for Culture This Afternoon and Evening
Who it’s for: Travelers looking for a cultural program.
What’s on: Several interesting events are taking place in Madeira today.
- From 2:00 PM: The international music and dance festival Dancilhas 2026 begins in the gardens of São Martinho (Funchal).
- From 9:00 PM: The local cultural center in Estreito da Calheta will host a chamber theater performance of “Papi” (in Spanish and Portuguese).
Our recommendation: The Dancilhas festival is a great tip for an open-air afternoon. For the evening theater performance in Calheta, we recommend booking tickets in advance due to the venue’s limited capacity.
