Weather and Tip for the Day: Mountains in the Morning, Beaches in the Afternoon
Today’s forecast is perfect for active travellers. The morning and forenoon cloud cover will provide pleasant shade for hiking, so you won’t have to worry about the harsh sun. The weather is expected to clear up in the afternoon, with temperatures climbing to a pleasant 28°C. The sea temperature remains between 23 and 25°C, ideal for swimming.
- Who is this for? All tourists on the island.
- What does this mean in practice? Perfect conditions for combining hiking and relaxing by the sea. The north coast may see waves up to 2 meters, while the south remains calm.
- Our recommendation: Head out for a levada or mountain walk in the morning. In the afternoon, enjoy the sun and calm sea at one of the south coast beaches.
Hiking Trails: Important Changes on PR 1 (Pico do Arieiro ↔ Pico Ruivo)
The Madeira Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has issued a warning about key restrictions on the island’s most famous mountain trail. If you are planning to hike between the highest peaks, please pay close attention to the following rules.
- The eastern route (via Pico das Torres) is completely closed for safety reasons.
- The western route (via the tunnels) is partially one-way. From Pico do Arieiro, the trail is two-way only up to the Miradouro da Pedra Rija viewpoint. From that point onwards to Pico Ruivo, the route is ONE-WAY ONLY.
- Mandatory booking and fee: Access to the trail is only possible with a pre-purchased time slot via the government’s Simplifica portal. Without a valid booking, you risk a fine from the forest rangers.
Who is this for? All hikers planning the high-altitude PR 1 trek.
Our recommendation: Plan your hike well in advance. Check the availability of time slots and make your booking online. Respect the one-way section and never enter the closed eastern path.

Practical Info: New Law Bans Face Coverings
As of today, a new law comes into effect in Madeira (and all of Portugal) that bans the covering of the face in public spaces (streets, shops, transport). Violations are subject to heavy fines (from €150).
- Who is this for? All visitors to the island.
- What does this mean in practice? Do not wear balaclavas or scarves that cover your face in towns and villages. An exception is made for medical face masks. In the mountains, protecting your face from wind or cold for climatic reasons is permitted.
