Trail Update: Temporary Closure on PR1

The most important news for all mountain hiking enthusiasts. The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has announced that on Wednesday, August 19th and Thursday, August 20th, the turn-off to the iconic Miradouro do Ninho da Manta viewpoint will be completely closed for maintenance.

  • Who it affects: Hikers planning to tackle the famous PR1 Vereda do Areeiro trail (between Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo) in the next two days.
  • What this means in practice: The main PR1 trail itself remains fully open. However, it will not be possible to take the detour to visit the world-famous “Buzzard’s Nest” viewpoint, where stairs and railings are being repaired.
  • Our recommendation: If you are hiking the PR1 today (August 18th), the viewpoint is still accessible. Over the next two days, please respect the signs and do not enter the closed section. Also, remember the mandatory online registration and fee payment to access the trail via the SIMplifica portal.

Practical Tips for Today (August 18th)

Drivers, Beware: Zero Tolerance for Alcohol

A nationwide police operation, “Taxa Zero ao Volante” (Zero Rate at the Wheel), has launched today on Madeira’s roads and will run until August 24th. Its goal is to prevent and detect driving under the influence of alcohol.

  • Who it affects: All drivers, especially tourists with rental cars.
  • What this means in practice: Expect a significant increase in random roadside checks across the island. The police are enforcing a zero-tolerance policy.
  • Our recommendation: Do not drive after consuming any amount of alcohol, including the traditional poncha. Fines in Portugal are very high and can lead to the confiscation of your driver’s license.

Swimming and Beaches: South is Ideal, Caution on the West Coast

The weather is perfect for summer fun. Temperatures are rising to 27°C, and the sea temperature is a pleasant 24-25°C. On the south coast, waves are less than one meter high, guaranteeing excellent swimming conditions. However, a warning has been issued for the west coast at Paul do Mar due to sea anemones.

  • Who it affects: Anyone heading to the sea.
  • What this means in practice: Contact with an anemone, which can hide among rocks in shallow water, causes a painful sting.
  • Our recommendation: Always wear protective water shoes on rocky and pebble beaches. Pay attention to local warning signs.

Culture in Funchal: The Folk Festival Begins

If you’re in Funchal this evening, don’t miss the opening of the “Funchal Folk” international festival. The event runs until Thursday and will feature 11 groups from Madeira and abroad.

  • Who it affects: Visitors to Funchal, families with children, and culture enthusiasts.
  • What this means in practice: You can expect a fantastic atmosphere filled with music and dance in the city’s streets, especially in the Imaculado Coração de Maria district.
  • Our recommendation: All performances are free and open to the public. It’s a great opportunity to experience local traditions.

Services and Opening Hours

Two brief practical updates. On the island of Porto Santo, police are more strictly enforcing the opening hours of bars and restaurants, so don’t count on extended evening service. Meanwhile, in Funchal on Avenida Arriaga, the Loja do Cidadão citizen service center is fully operational again after a technical shutdown, where you can handle any administrative matters (e.g., lost documents).
