What is happening? A red flag is flying at Funchal’s largest beach, Praia Formosa (western section), due to very strong surf and dangerous currents. Swimming is strictly forbidden.
Our recommendation: Respect the ban. For safe swimming, choose the protected lidos or the natural swimming pools in Porto Moniz and Seixal.

For Trail Lovers: Current Conditions on PR 1
Restrictions on the Pico do Areeiro – Pico Ruivo Trail
Who is affected? Hikers heading to Madeira’s most famous trek.
What is happening? Today is the last day the trail section to the Miradouro do Ninho da Manta viewpoint is closed for maintenance. The main PR 1 route is open, but it is strictly one-way only (from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo).
What this means in practice: You cannot return to Pico do Areeiro the same way you came. The hike ends at the Achada do Teixeira car park (PR 1.2 trail), from where you must arrange transportation in advance (taxi or transfer). Don’t forget the mandatory online registration and fee payment via the SIMplifica portal.
