Weather and Safety: High Temperature Alert
Today’s main news is the extension of the yellow warning for high temperatures, which is in effect for the entire archipelago. The heatwave not only increases fatigue during outdoor activities but, more importantly, raises the risk of wildfires. It is strictly forbidden to light fires, use camp stoves, or discard cigarette butts in forested areas.
- Who is affected? All tourists, especially those planning to hike in the mountains.
- What does this mean in practice? The warning is in effect for the coast until Saturday evening (August 8th) and in the mountains until Friday evening (August 7th). Expect higher than usual temperatures.
- Our recommendations: Plan your hikes for the early morning. Avoid exposed ridges and trails without shade during midday and afternoon hours. Pack extra water (at least 2-3 liters per person), a hat, and high-SPF sunscreen.
Hiking Trail Status: Closures and Restrictions on PR1
Madeira’s Forest and Nature Conservation authority (IFCN) has updated the list of accessible hiking trails. Please respect all closures; forestry police are conducting more frequent patrols, and violations are subject to fines.

- PR 28 Levada da Rocha Vermelha
- PR 3 Levada do Pico do Castelo (Porto Santo)
Restrictions on PR1 Vereda do Areeiro:
The most popular mountain trail between the peaks of Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo is open, but with an important restriction. Only the western route (via the tunnels) is accessible. The eastern path via Pico das Torres is closed. Additionally, a one-way system is in place on the section from the Pedra Rija viewpoint towards Pico Ruivo to prevent congestion on the narrow path.
Don’t forget: For trails that require a fee, online registration and payment via the SIMplifica portal are necessary.

Practical Tip: Parking is expected to be difficult in both towns. It’s best to use public transport or a taxi.

Authentic Folklore in Monte
For a truly local experience, head up above Funchal to the Monte district this evening. In the Curral dos Romeiros area, a traditional celebration (arraial) is taking place with folklore music and local food. The church service begins at 20:00, with the cultural program starting around 21:30.
Stargazing at Pico do Areeiro
The Astronomical Observatory near Casa do Areeiro is hosting two free events. This Saturday, August 8th (from 21:30), there will be a night of stargazing, and on Wednesday, August 12th (from 18:30), a viewing of the partial solar eclipse and the Perseid meteor shower. Don’t forget to bring very warm clothing!
