Mountain Weather vs. Calm Coastline

Today’s forecast for Madeira indicates mostly cloudy conditions. While the south coast will enjoy very calm seas with waves under one meter and a water temperature of around 23°C—ideal for swimming—the higher elevations of the island can expect rain showers and fog this afternoon.

  • Who this affects: Hikers heading to the mountains (e.g., Pico do Areeiro) and anyone planning a day at the beach.
  • What this means: In the mountains, you can expect reduced visibility, damp conditions, and cooler temperatures. The south coast, however, offers perfect conditions for relaxing by the sea.
  • Our recommendation: If you are heading into the mountains, pack waterproof and warm layers. The south coast is your safest bet for good weather today.

Trail Status and Mandatory Fees

The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) reports on the status of the most popular routes. The main update concerns the PR1 – Vereda do Areeiro ridge trail, which is fully open, but only the western variant that goes through the tunnels. The eastern route via Pico das Torres remains closed for safety reasons.

  • Who this affects: All hikers planning to use the marked PR trails.
  • What this means: To access trails such as PR1, you must register online in advance on the Simplifica portal and pay a fee (the fee for non-residents is €10.50). Access to the dangerous eastern section of the PR1 is strictly forbidden.
  • Our recommendation: Plan your hike on PR1 well in advance and secure your online permit. Respect all closures, as there is a serious risk of falling rocks.

Important Transport Change: Rodoeste Terminal in Funchal

There has been a major change for passengers using the Rodoeste bus company, which provides services to the west of the island (Ribeira Brava, Calheta, Porto Moniz). The terminal has permanently relocated from the Campo da Barca area.

  • Who this affects: Travelers planning to go to the west of Madeira by public transport from Funchal.
  • What this means: Rodoeste buses are no longer found at their original location. They now depart from the new terminal in the Ribeira de João Gomes garden area.
  • Our recommendation: Check the new terminal’s location on a map before your trip to ensure you don’t miss your bus. For drivers, the good news is that 200 new parking spaces will be created at the site of the old terminal.

Culture and Events: What to Do in and Around Funchal

Madeira comes alive with culture in the summer. Currently in Funchal, you can visit the Expomadeira fair at the Estádio do Marítimo, which showcases producers from Madeira, the Azores, and mainland Portugal. At the same time, the biggest sporting event of the year, the Rali Vinho Madeira (late July to early August), is approaching, which will affect travel around the island.

  • Who this affects: All visitors looking for evening entertainment or planning a stay at the end of the month.
  • What this means: Expomadeira is an excellent opportunity to taste local specialties and purchase unique souvenirs. During the rally, you should anticipate widespread mountain road closures and limited accommodation availability.
  • Our recommendation: Spend an evening visiting the Expomadeira fair. If your stay overlaps with the rally, book your accommodation and car rental far in advance and keep an eye on traffic reports.
