Safety First: Two Serious Warnings

Unfortunately, Sunday’s news is marked by two incidents that serve as a reminder of how crucial it is to prioritize safety and respect all signage in Madeira. Please be careful.

Cascata dos Anjos Waterfall: Do Not Enter, Danger Ahead!

  • Who it affects: All tourists heading to the Ponta do Sol area.
  • What this means: The popular waterfall, where water falls directly onto the ER101 road (Caminho dos Anjos), is officially and long-term CLOSED due to the risk of rockfalls and landslides. Despite this, the site attracts dozens of people daily who ignore concrete barriers and warning signs to take photos.
  • What we recommend: Avoid the location completely. The unstable rock face poses a real and life-threatening danger. Respect the closure—your photo is not worth the risk.

Tourist Fall in Funchal: Respect Safety Barriers

  • Who it affects: Visitors to Funchal, especially those taking night-time walks along the coast.
  • What this means: Last night, a young tourist was seriously injured after climbing a safety fence and falling nearly 20 meters into the Barreirinha swimming complex area.
  • What we recommend: Never climb over fences, walls, or barriers, especially after dark and near cliffs. They are there for a good reason.

Eco Rally Madeira (Funchal – Machico Route)

  • Who it affects: Drivers travelling between Funchal and the eastern part of the island.
  • What this means: An international rally for eco-friendly vehicles is underway. On secondary regional roads (outside the VR1 expressway), you may encounter quiet electric race cars and face minor restrictions from the organisers.
  • What we recommend: For a quick journey between Funchal and Machico, use the VR1 motorway. Drive with extra caution on the older roads.

Vespa Scooter Meet-up on Porto Santo

  • Who it affects: Visitors to the island of Porto Santo.
  • What this means: More than one hundred classic and modern Vespa scooters are crisscrossing the island as part of a national rally. They may form slow-moving convoys on scenic routes.
  • What we recommend: Be patient and enjoy the stylish spectacle. It’s a great opportunity for photographers.

Supermoto Races in Porto da Cruz

  • Who it affects: Tourists on the northeast coast in the Faial / Porto da Cruz area.
  • What this means: The Supermoto Grand Prix is taking place at the local Kartódromo do Faial circuit. Expect a higher concentration of motorcycles, noise, and fuller car parks in the vicinity.
  • What we recommend: If you’re a motorsport fan, it’s a great spectator experience. If not, consider visiting a different part of the north coast today.

Weather and Trail Conditions

Mountains and North Coast

  • Who it affects: Hikers planning mountain treks (e.g., PR1 Pico do Arieiro – Pico Ruivo) and levada walks in the north.
  • What this means: The weather is mostly cloudy. Light showers and fog are expected on the northern slopes and in higher elevations during the late afternoon. Temperatures in Funchal are reaching 25°C.
  • What we recommend: For mountain hikes, set out as early as possible in the morning. Don’t forget a waterproof jacket and be prepared for slippery trail surfaces and reduced visibility. For swimming, the beaches on the south coast are more suitable today, with waves under 1 meter.
