Quick Overview: A Day for Recovery and Caution
Storm Emília, which has impacted the island in recent days, is finally losing strength and moving away. This is good news. The weather, especially on the south coast around Funchal, is improving with sunshine breaking through. However, important warnings regarding mountain hikes, transportation, and ocean safety remain in effect. Here is an overview of the most important information for your plans today.
Trail and Mountain Conditions: Avoid Hiking Today!
This is the most important safety message for today. Even though the rain is less intense, the ground is extremely saturated and unstable.
- Who is affected? All hikers planning trips, especially on levadas, PR routes, or mountain treks.
- What does this mean in practice? There is an increased risk of falling trees, as their roots are weakened in the wet soil. There is also a risk of landslides and falling rocks. Firefighters responded to several such incidents overnight. Additionally, meteorologists warn of possible local thunderstorms and hail, especially at higher altitudes and in the north.
- Our Recommendation: We strongly advise against mountain hikes and levada walks today. Safety comes first. Choose an activity in the city or on the south coast instead.
Transportation: Airport Operational, Caution on Roads and Ferries
Funchal Airport (FNC)
Operations at Cristiano Ronaldo Airport are returning to normal after disruptions on Friday and Saturday. Flights are arriving and departing. If you are traveling today, be prepared for larger crowds in the terminal as passengers from canceled flights are also being processed.
Roads and Driving
Be careful, as roads may still be wet with a risk of aquaplaning. In forested areas, fallen branches or debris may be on the road. Specific restrictions: A section of the road in the São Vicente area on the north coast is closed due to the risk of rockfalls. Expect a detour.
Travel to Porto Santo
Planning a trip to the neighboring island? Take note.
- Ferry: Due to a forecast of high seas, the Porto Santo Line has adjusted tomorrow’s (Monday’s) schedule. If you have a ticket, verify the exact departure time directly with the operator.
- Plane: The morning Binter flight to Porto Santo has been canceled. Although international flights are operating, the situation for inter-island connections can be complicated. It is best to confirm your flight status.
Ocean Safety: Beware of High Waves
The Funchal Port Authority has extended the rough sea warning until Monday morning. On the north coast, waves can reach heights of up to 5.5 meters.
- Who is affected? Anyone near the coastline.
- What does this mean in practice? The waves are incredibly powerful and can sweep you away unexpectedly.
- Our Recommendation: Do not approach breakwaters, piers, or cliff edges, not even to take photos. It is life-threatening.
Christmas Program: Cancellations and Alternatives
The bad weather has also impacted Christmas celebrations, but the situation is improving.
- Postponed: The arrival of Santa Claus in Ribeira Brava was postponed due to rain.
- Program Change in Funchal: The “Christmas Around The World” orchestra concert, which was canceled yesterday, will take place today, Sunday, December 14th, at 9:30 PM in the Auditorio Jardim Municipal. This is a great opportunity to soak up the evening atmosphere.
- Today’s Tip: In Funchal, the Mercado dos Lavradores is hosting the “Domingos Natal na Praça” (Christmas Sundays at the Market) event. It is open until 8:00 PM and is an ideal “dry” option for this afternoon.
