Weather: Beware of Wind and High Waves
Madeira is currently under the influence of the low-pressure system ‘Leonardo,’ which is bringing strong winds and rough seas. The IPMA meteorological institute has issued several warnings that all travelers should take into account.
- North Coast: An orange warning is in effect for high waves, which could reach up to 12 meters. This mainly affects areas like Porto Moniz and Seixal.
- Mountains and South Coast: A yellow warning is in place for strong winds. In the mountains, gusts can reach up to 100 km/h, and around 85 km/h on the coast.
What This Means in Practice
- For Ocean Lovers: Definitely avoid swimming and water sports on the north coast today. Respect the power of the ocean and do not stay in the immediate vicinity of the waves.
- For Drivers: Be prepared for strong crosswinds when driving at higher altitudes and on the Via Rápida expressway.
- For Mountain Hikers: The wind significantly lowers the wind chill temperature and increases the risk of falls. Today is not suitable for ascents to the highest peaks.
Status of Hiking Trails and Levadas
Adverse weather and recent rainfall have a direct impact on the safety and accessibility of many popular hiking trails. The Forestry Service (IFCN) has reported several significant restrictions.
Key Closures and Restrictions
- PR1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Areeiro ↔ Pico Ruivo): The trail is PARTIALLY OPEN. From Pico do Areeiro, you can only reach the Ninho da Manta viewpoint (approx. 1.2 km). The path to the tunnels and onwards to Pico Ruivo is CLOSED for safety reasons.
- PR10 Levada do Furado: The trail from Ribeiro Frio is CLOSED due to a landslide.
- Other Closed Trails: Trails that are completely closed also include PR1.3 Vereda da Encumeada, PR7 Levada do Moinho, PR16 Levada Fajã do Rodrigues, PR20 Vereda do Jardim do Mar, and PR28 Levada da Fajã do Rodrigues.
Our Recommendations for Hiking
Do not attempt to hike on closed trails or bypass prohibitions. Today, we recommend choosing safer alternatives at lower altitudes. A good option might be the ascent to Pico Ruivo from the Achada do Teixeira car park (PR1.2), where you are more sheltered. The popular PR6 Levada das 25 Fontes is usually open, but be aware that the paths can be very slippery. Always check the current conditions on-site.
Travel and Other Practical Information
The strong winds may also affect air travel. Cristiano Ronaldo Airport is sensitive to crosswinds, so we recommend monitoring your flight status. Short-term power outages may occur in more remote parts of the island, but most accommodations are equipped with generators.
Tips for a Safe Itinerary
Today’s weather is perfect for exploring places that are sheltered from wind and rain. Consider visiting:
- Museums in Funchal: For example, the CR7 Museum, Madeira Story Centre, or the Whale Museum in Caniçal.
- Wine Tasting: Blandy’s Wine Lodge in the center of Funchal is an excellent choice.
- Mercado dos Lavradores: Immerse yourself in the colors and aromas of local produce.
