Funchal Captivated by Flowers: The Grand Festa da Flor Parade
Who is affected?
All visitors to Funchal, drivers, and anyone planning to be in the city center today.
What does this mean in practice?
This afternoon, the main allegorical parade of the Flower Festival will take to the streets. This will result in extensive road closures in the city center, especially along the waterfront promenade Avenida do Mar and adjacent streets. Large crowds are expected, and finding a parking spot will be virtually impossible.
What we recommend:
- If you want to attend the parade, head to the city center well in advance.
- Leave your car in a car park further from the center or at your hotel, and get around on foot or by public transport.
- Enjoy the unique atmosphere, colorful costumes, and allegorical floats adorned with thousands of flowers.
Rain and Wind in the Mountains: Yellow Warning in Effect
Who is affected?
Hikers planning trips to the mountains, on levadas, and drivers on mountain roads.
What does this mean in practice?
Meteorologists have issued a yellow warning for rain for the south coast and mountainous regions of Madeira. Overcast skies and persistent rainfall are expected. The surfaces on levadas and trails will be very slippery and dangerous. On mountain roads, there is a risk of reduced visibility, falling rocks, and localized landslides.
Rescue services are also warning of a sharp increase in mountain rescue operations – there have been more in the first four months of this year than in all of last year. This is often due to underestimating the conditions and inadequate equipment. Similar warnings apply to the coast, where strong currents and high surf can be dangerous.
What we recommend:
- Postpone high-altitude hikes and trips to exposed levadas today.
- If you do decide to go for an easy walk, wear high-quality waterproof and non-slip footwear.
- Inform someone of your plan and route.
- Be extremely cautious when driving in the mountains and near ocean cliffs.
Trail Status and New Rules
Who is affected?
Anyone planning to hike on the marked hiking trails (PR).
What does this mean in practice?
The most famous high-altitude trail, PR1 Vereda do Areeiro (between the peaks of Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo), is officially open, but only its first section to the Miradouro da Pedra Rija viewpoint is passable. The section via Pico das Torres towards Pico Ruivo is closed.
We also remind you that since the beginning of 2026, online booking and payment of an entrance fee are mandatory for selected PR trails. Everything must be arranged in advance through the official Simplifica portal.
What we recommend:
- Before any hike, check the current trail status on the official IFCN website (Madeira Trail Status).
- If you are planning to hike a PR trail that requires a fee, book your ticket online in advance.
- Given the weather and the partial closure of PR1, we recommend choosing a different, safer destination today.
