Warning for the Mountains: Cold Snap and Possible Snow on the Peaks

If you were planning a hike to Madeira’s highest peaks today, you need to change your plans. The meteorological institute has issued a warning for a significant drop in temperature, strong winds, and the possibility of snow on Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo.

  • Who is affected? All tourists and hikers heading to the island’s highest elevations.
  • What does this mean in practice? Trails may be icy, slippery, and visibility reduced by fog. Movement along the ridges is dangerous. Views will likely be non-existent.
  • Our recommendation: Absolutely avoid the PR1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Areeiro ↔ Pico Ruivo) hike today. Instead, choose a levada walk at a lower altitude.

Trail Status: Closures and Fee Reminder

The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has updated the status of hiking trails. Some are inaccessible for safety reasons.

  • Who is affected? Hikers planning any trek.
  • What does this mean in practice? The following trails are officially CLOSED:
    • PR1 Vereda do Areeiro (only the eastern route via Pico das Torres)
    • PR10 Levada do Furado (due to a landslide)
    • PR3 Levada do Pico do Castelo (work in progress)
  • Our recommendation: Always check the current trail status on the official IFCN website or the WalkMe app before you hike. Remember that non-residents must pay a €3 fee online to access recommended routes (PRs).

Funchal Under Pressure: Four Cruise Ships and the End of Christmas

Four large cruise ships are docked in the port today, which will significantly impact movement in the capital. At the same time, the Christmas celebrations are culminating.

  • Who is affected? Anyone heading to Funchal’s city center, the market (Mercado dos Lavradores), or the cable car to Monte.
  • What does this mean in practice? Expect large crowds, longer queues, and busy streets, especially between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
  • Our recommendation: If you dislike crowds, plan your visit to Funchal’s center for the late afternoon. In the evening, don’t miss the traditional “Cantar os Reis” (Singing of the Kings) in the city center – it’s the last chance to experience the full Christmas atmosphere.
