Weather and Recommendations for Today’s Trips
Today, Saturday, Madeira will experience typical autumn weather. Expect mostly cloudy skies, especially on the north coast and at higher altitudes, where light rain showers may occur. The wind will be light. In contrast, the south coast around Funchal and Calheta promises more favorable conditions.
- Who this affects: All tourists planning trips outside of Funchal.
- What this means in practice: If you are heading to the mountains (e.g., Rabacal) or the north (Porto Moniz, São Vicente), be prepared for the possibility of rain, slippery paths, and reduced visibility due to fog.
- Our recommendation: Pack a waterproof jacket and wear sturdy shoes with good grip. Be especially cautious in the mountains.
Mountain Trail Status: Pico do Arieiro, Pico Ruivo, and Others
For all mountain hiking enthusiasts, we have key information about the status of the most popular trails:
- PR1 Vereda do Areeiro: The most famous ridge walk is partially closed. Only the section from Pico do Areeiro to the Miradouro da Pedra Rija viewpoint is accessible. The eastern part leading past Pico das Torres is closed for safety reasons. A complete traverse from Arieiro to Ruivo is therefore not possible today.
- Ascent to Pico Ruivo: You can reach Madeira’s highest peak without any issues via the PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo trail from the Achada do Teixeira car park. This route is fully open and safe.
- PR10 Levada do Furado: This popular levada walk is fully operational again after repairs.
- Important Notice: To access all officially marked trails (PR), you must register online on the Simplifica portal and pay a fee of €3 per person (free for residents and children under 12).
Events and Festivals: Where to Go Today?
Madeira is alive today not only with tourism but also with culture and sports. Here are three tips on where to go.
Madeira Backyard Ultra in Machico
An extreme running race is taking place today around Machico and on the slopes of Pico do Facho. Expect a higher number of athletes, full car parks, and a bustling atmosphere around the marina. If you plan to hike here, please be considerate on the trails.
Whale Festival in Caniçal
The fishing town of Caniçal is hosting the “Arraial da Baleia” festival from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM to celebrate the protection of marine mammals. It’s a great opportunity to end a trip to the eastern cape of Ponta de São Lourenço and experience the local atmosphere with music. However, expect fuller car parks in the town center.
Puppet Festival in Funchal
Funchal’s city center has come alive with the MARIOFA festival. Families with children will particularly enjoy the street performances in the Municipal Gardens (Jardim Municipal) or near the Mercado dos Lavradores, most of which are free.
Practical Information: Funchal and Transport
The following information will be useful when moving around the capital and its surroundings.
Traffic Restrictions in Funchal’s Center
From 11:00 AM, a civic gathering will take place in the center of Funchal in front of the Regional Parliament building (ALRAM). It is advisable to avoid this area during the morning due to potential crowds and minor traffic disruptions.
Transport and Travel
Good news for travelers: the Bolt app is expanding its vehicle fleet in Madeira starting today, making travel easier. At the same time, the main cruise ship season is beginning, so expect a higher number of pedestrians in the center of Funchal and around the port.
