Great Weather, But Be Cautious by the Sea

Madeira reports ideal summer weather today. Temperatures will climb to 28°C, and the sea temperature is a fantastic 23 to 25°C. However, despite the sunny skies, an important warning is in effect for the coastline around Funchal. Dangerous and unpredictable waves, known locally as “levadias,” are occurring, which can appear even when the sea seems completely calm.

  • Who is affected? All visitors to beaches and swimming complexes in the Funchal area.
  • What does this mean in practice? At the popular Praia Formosa beach, a red flag is flying (swimming is prohibited), and the Ponta Gorda swimming complex has been temporarily closed. These waves can unexpectedly flood piers and the coastline.
  • Our recommendation: Strictly respect the flags and instructions from lifeguards. Do not linger on the edges of piers and do not enter the sea in unsupervised areas where there is a risk of being pulled away by a current.

Funchal Changes Traffic Flow, Scooters on the Rise

If you are planning to travel by car or bus to Funchal’s city center today, take note. A major traffic reorganization has come into effect today, aimed at speeding up public transport but potentially complicating things for drivers and passengers.

Changes in Funchal City Center

  • Who is affected? Drivers and public transport users in Funchal.
  • What does this mean in practice? New dedicated bus lanes (marked in yellow) have been created on the key streets of Rua 5 de Outubro, Rua 31 de Janeiro, and Rua do Visconde de Anadia. Entry for private cars is prohibited and subject to a fine. Additionally, some bus stops have been moved, and the terminal stop at the Anadia shopping center has been discontinued.
  • Our recommendation: Allow more time for your journey through the center of Funchal. If you are driving, park exclusively in underground garages. Bus passengers should verify the location of their stop.

The Scooter Trend

An increasing number of tourists are choosing scooters or motorcycles as their mode of transport on the island. The reason is not only the savings of 40 to 50 euros per day but primarily the easier parking at crowded tourist spots like Cabo Girão or Pico do Areeiro.

  • Who is affected? Tourists planning to rent a vehicle.
  • Our recommendation: A scooter is a great option if you have sufficient driving experience. Madeira’s roads are steep and full of switchbacks. Always wear a helmet and be prepared for strong winds in the mountains.

Trail Status: PR1 is One-Way and Registration is Mandatory

Good news for all hiking enthusiasts – most of the officially recommended trails are fully open. However, it is essential to check the status beforehand and adhere to new rules, which include mandatory registration and a fee of €4.50 per selected trail for non-residents.

  • Who is affected? Anyone planning to hike the levadas and mountain trails.
  • Current Status and Restrictions:
    • Completely closed trails: PR7 (Levada do Moinho), PR20 (Vereda do Jardim do Mar), PR27, PR28, and PS-PR3 on Porto Santo.
    • Partially open: PR1.3 (Vereda da Encumeada) is passable only in the section from Pico Ruivo to Boca das Torrinhas.
    • PR1 (Pico do Areeiro ↔ Pico Ruivo): Madeira’s most famous traverse is open, but it operates ONLY in a one-way direction from Pico do Areeiro towards Pico Ruivo. Returning along the same path is prohibited.
  • Our recommendation: Before each hike, register on the SIMplifica portal and pay the fee. Accessing closed trails or hiking without registration is subject to a fine. For the PR1 trail, plan your transportation back from the Achada do Teixeira car park (the end point after descending from Pico Ruivo via trail PR1.2) in advance, for example, by booking a taxi. Expect stronger winds on the ridges today (gusts up to 40 km/h), so be sure to pack a windproof jacket.

Evening Tips: Art and Music with an Ocean View

If you’re looking for a cultural experience after a day of exploring, we have two great tips for this evening.

  • MARtístico Exhibition: At 18:00, the opening of an exhibition focused on the protection of the marine ecosystem begins at the Cultural and Research Center in Funchal (CCIF). An ideal plan for a late afternoon in the city.
  • Concert in Ponta do Sol: At 22:00, singer Duarte Pint da Mata will perform as part of the “Concertos L” series. The concert takes place at the Estalagem da Ponta do Sol hotel and offers a unique atmosphere on a stage set on a cliff directly above the ocean.
