Weather: Where to Find Sun and Where to Bring a Raincoat Today?
Today’s weather on the island is perfect for last-minute plans. There are significant differences between the north and the south. For sunbathing and swimming, we strongly recommend the southwest coast (areas like Ponta do Sol and Calheta), where you can expect sunny skies and a pleasant sea temperature of 24 to 25°C. In contrast, the north coast and the island of Porto Santo are reporting heavy cloud cover with a chance of light rain towards the evening. Funchal will be partly cloudy during the day, but a shower may also appear in the evening.
- Who this affects: All tourists planning their day’s itinerary.
- What this means in practice: Your choice of destination today will significantly impact your experience.
- Our recommendation: Head south and southwest for sunshine. If you’re heading to the mountains (e.g., Pico do Areeiro), set out as early as possible in the morning. Stronger winds and cloud cover are expected towards the evening. Don’t forget a waterproof jacket.
Cultural Explosion in Machico: Classic Cars, Music, and Folklore
The eastern town of Machico is the island’s cultural epicenter today, which brings a fantastic atmosphere but also significant traffic complications. Several major events are happening at once:
- Machico Classic Car Fest: Until 5:00 PM, 170 classic vehicles are on display in the town center.
- Concerts and Celebrations: The local police are celebrating their anniversary with concerts, and at 5:00 PM, a symphony orchestra concert will take place at the “Na Rosa dos Ventos” monument.
- Macaronesia Folklore Festival: From 6:30 PM, the main square will come alive with dance and music from ensembles from Madeira, the Azores, and the Canary Islands.
Traffic Situation in Machico
Who this affects: Drivers and tourists heading to Machico or passing through towards the São Lourenço peninsula.
What this means in practice: The town center is congested, streets are partially closed, and finding a free parking space is nearly impossible. A morning football derby has further complicated the situation.
Our recommendation: If you are not planning to attend one of the events directly, it’s best to avoid the Machico area today. If you are going to the festivals, use public transport and be prepared for delays.
Tips for Other Events: São Vicente and Porto Santo
If you prefer a quieter atmosphere, we have two great tips for you. In the town of São Vicente on the north coast, traditional festivities are culminating today. From 4:00 PM, a celebratory mass and a procession through the town will take place, featuring stunning handmade flower carpets. On the neighboring island of Porto Santo, a traditional festival (arraial) is underway with dozens of stalls selling local specialties like espetada, bolo do caco, and poncha. It’s the perfect opportunity to taste Madeira with all your senses.
Warning: Parking in Funchal
Who this affects: All drivers with rental cars in Funchal.
What this means in practice: The city of Funchal is preparing to introduce new bus lanes. The police (PSP) have already intensified checks and are strictly fining and towing vehicles parked outside designated areas, especially near bus stops. Even a brief stop with hazard lights on can result in your car being towed and a hefty fine.
Our recommendation: Park exclusively in paid car parks or parking garages to avoid unnecessary complications.
