Mountains and Trails: Open Again Without Restrictions
After yesterday’s extraordinary influx of tourists watching the solar eclipse, the situation in the mountains is returning to normal. The access roads to viewpoints, especially around Pico do Areeiro, are once again clear today, and no special traffic restrictions are in place. The weather is stable and ideal for hiking.
Status of the Most Popular Trails
- PR1 Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Areeiro ↔ Pico Ruivo): The trail is fully open without any restrictions. It’s an ideal day to hike it.
- PR10 Levada do Furado (Ribeiro Frio → Portela): The levada is fully accessible.
- PR1.3 Vereda da Encumeada: WARNING! This trail remains partially closed. Only the section between the Pico Ruivo summit and the Boca das Torrinhas pass is open. The section towards Encumeada is inaccessible for safety reasons.
Who does this affect? All hikers and drivers heading to the central part of the island.
What does this mean in practice? You can safely set out on the famous PR1 mountain trail. For other trails, always check their current status.
Our recommendation: Remember that for paid trails (including PR1), you must register in advance on the Simplifica portal and pay the €3 fee per person (for non-residents over 12 years old). This will help you avoid any complications with the rangers.
Swimming in Funchal? Better to Go Elsewhere Today
Local authorities are currently addressing complaints about smelly and cloudy water along the Funchal coast. The issue affects the popular tourist area from the Lido Velho complex to the Forte de São Tiago fortress in the Old Town (Zona Velha).
Who does this affect? Tourists planning to swim in the ocean directly in Funchal.
What does this mean in practice? Water quality in this area may be temporarily compromised.
Our recommendation: Until the situation is resolved, we advise choosing other locations for swimming. Excellent and safe alternatives today include the natural pools in Porto Moniz, the volcanic beach in Seixal, or the golden sandy beaches in Machico or Calheta.
