An Evening Sky Spectacle: Partial Solar Eclipse
Today, August 12th, you can witness a rare astronomical event in Madeira – a partial solar eclipse, during which the Moon will cover up to 77% of the solar disk.
When and Where?
The peak of the eclipse will occur at exactly 7:30 PM local time. However, expect noticeable twilight for about an hour before and after this time. The best public viewing spot will be Pico do Areeiro, where the Astronomical Association of Madeira (AAAM) is hosting a public event from 6:30 PM.
Practical Advice and Safety
- For Drivers: If you are on the road during the eclipse (approx. from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM), be extra vigilant. With the sudden twilight, remember to turn on your dipped headlights and pay full attention to the road.
- For Mountain Viewers: Expect increased traffic and full car parks at viewpoints, especially at Pico do Areeiro. There will be an increased presence of forest guards in the area due to the high risk of wildfires. Park only in designated areas and follow their instructions.
- Eye Protection: NEVER use regular sunglasses for viewing. There is a risk of permanent eye damage. You need special certified glasses with an ISO 12312-2 filter.
Weather and Trail Conditions
Yellow Warning for High Temperatures
A yellow weather warning for high temperatures is in effect for the entire island until Friday, with coastal temperatures reaching 28°C. In the mountains, it feels even hotter, and the sun is very strong.
- Planning Your Hike: For longer treks, especially on exposed mountain trails like PR1, start as early in the morning as possible.
- Hydration and Protection: Bring at least 2 liters of water per person, a hat, and high-SPF sunscreen. There is a high risk of sunstroke and rapid dehydration.
Current Status of Popular Trails (PR)
Most trails are open, but with important restrictions:
- PR 1 (Pico do Areeiro ↔ Pico Ruivo): The route is passable, but be aware! The section between the Pedra Rija viewpoint and the summit of Pico Ruivo is one-way only. For the return journey, you must use the western route through the tunnels. The eastern ridge trail via Pico das Torres is closed.
- PR 1.3 (Vereda da Encumeada): Only the section from Pico Ruivo to the Boca das Torrinhas pass (approx. 3.9 km) is open. The rest of the trail to the Encumeada pass is closed due to erosion.
Please note that as a non-resident, you must register in advance on the Simplifica Madeira portal and pay a fee of €3 per person (children under 12 are free) to access these trails.
