Summer Festivals in Full Swing: Food, Music, and Traffic Tips
Madeira is pulsating with the rhythm of summer festivals today. The highlight is a weekend full of gastronomy, bringing fantastic experiences but also traffic complications. Here’s a summary of what you need to know.
Festa do Peixe-Espada Preto in Câmara de Lobos
- Who is affected? Seafood lovers, fans of local culture, and anyone planning a trip to Câmara de Lobos.
- What this means: The historic center and the bay area are closed to cars until Sunday, and parking is virtually impossible. The 34th edition of the Black Scabbardfish Festival is taking place, which means dozens of food stalls, cooking shows, and evening music.
- Our recommendation: Do not drive here. Use bus lines from Funchal or take a taxi. The festival itself is a fantastic experience well worth a visit.
Gastronomy Week in Machico and Football in Funchal
- Who is affected? Music and football fans, as well as tourists staying in the western part of Funchal (Lido area).
- What this means: In Machico, the Gastronomy Week culminates tonight at 10:00 PM with a concert by the legendary band GNR. In Funchal, a first-division football match featuring CS Marítimo starts at 3:30 PM, which will cause traffic jams and full car parks around the stadium in the Barreiros district and throughout the Lido area, roughly between 2:00 PM and 6:30 PM.
- Our recommendation: If you plan to leave Funchal for the airport or a trip this afternoon, depart well in advance. For an evening visit to Machico, we suggest using public transport.
Weather and Safety: Coastal Heatwave, Calm Seas
Yellow Warning for High Temperatures
- Who is affected? All tourists, especially those planning physical activities.
- What this means: Meteorologists have extended the Yellow Warning (Aviso Amarelo) until at least Monday. Coastal temperatures may reach 28–29°C with high humidity. Due to dry conditions, there is an extreme risk of forest fires.
- Our recommendation: Plan your hikes for the early morning hours. Carry at least 2 liters of water per person, wear a hat, and use sunscreen. Lighting fires in nature is strictly forbidden.
Minor Underwater Earthquake
A minor underwater earthquake with a magnitude of 2.5 was recorded north of the island. This is of no significance to tourists. The tremor was not felt on land, and there is no danger. All activities at sea and on the coast are completely safe.
Trail and Levada Status Update (August 8, 2026)

Great News: PR 10 Levada do Furado is Open!
After extensive maintenance, one of the most popular routes, PR 10 Levada do Furado (Ribeiro Frio – Portela), is once again fully open and safe. You can now embark on this beautiful trek through the laurel forest again.
Partial Closure on the Ridge Trail
The PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada trail remains partially closed. Only the section between Pico Ruivo and the Boca das Torrinhas pass is accessible. The rest of the route to the Encumeada pass is inaccessible for safety reasons. Therefore, do not plan to hike all the way to Encumeada.
