The Famous PR1 Trail is Reopen, But with Major Changes

Key news today for all mountain lovers. The PR1 Vereda do Areeiro trail, connecting the peaks of Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo, is accessible again after extensive maintenance. However, its reopening comes with significant changes that will affect every hiker’s plans.

Who is affected?

Anyone planning to hike Madeira’s most famous ridge trail.

What does this mean in practice?

  • Mandatory Booking: You must book your spot in advance via the SIMplifica app and pay a fee of €10.50.
  • One-Way System: From the Pedra Rija viewpoint, the trail is strictly one-way towards Pico Ruivo. It is not possible to return the same way to the Pico do Areeiro car park.
  • Logistical Changes: You must end your hike by descending at a different location, either via the PR1.1 trail to the village of Ilha or the PR1.2 trail to Achada do Teixeira.

What do we recommend?

Do not underestimate transportation. Arrange for a taxi or private transfer in advance from your end point (Achada do Teixeira is the more popular choice). Attempting to walk in the opposite direction is prohibited.

Safety and Closures: What to Watch Out for by the Sea

Although the weather is stable, some coastal spots remain inaccessible for safety reasons. Plan your swimming and coastal exploration with current restrictions in mind.

Access to Calhau da Lapa Beach Prohibited

  • Who is affected: Tourists looking for wild and remote beaches on the south of the island.
  • What this means in practice: Land access to the iconic Calhau da Lapa beach is strictly forbidden due to a high risk of falling rocks. Although the water quality is good, the prohibition signs must be respected.
  • What do we recommend: Avoid the risk and use safe, official beaches nearby, such as those in Campanário or Ponta do Sol.

Ponta Delgada Pools Still Closed

  • Who is affected: Visitors to the north coast who want to swim in the protected sea pools.
  • What this means in practice: The seawater pool complex in Ponta Delgada is closed for maintenance. It will not reopen until June 15th.
  • What do we recommend: For safe swimming on the north coast, head to the year-round volcanic pools in Porto Moniz or Seixal.

Weather and Transport: Practical Travel Tips

Today is better suited for calmer activities. The weather will be mild, but traffic around the capital city may be heavy.

Tuesday’s Weather

  • Who is affected: All tourists across the island.
  • What this means in practice: Expect mostly overcast skies with a chance of light showers, especially in the north and in the mountains. The wind will be moderate (up to 25 km/h). The good news is a slight warming in higher altitudes. The sea temperature on the south coast is a pleasant 18–19 °C.
  • What do we recommend: Pack a light waterproof jacket, especially if you are heading to the mountains.

Traffic Complications Near Funchal

  • Who is affected: Drivers and car passengers, particularly east of Funchal.
  • What this means in practice: Very heavy traffic is reported on the Via Rápida (VR1) motorway on the stretch between Cancela and Caniço. Congestion can significantly extend your travel time.
  • What do we recommend: If you have a fixed schedule (e.g., a flight from the airport, a booked tour), leave with plenty of extra time. Use navigation apps like Waze or Google Maps to monitor the current situation.
