Weather and Sea Safety: Caution on the North Coast

Starting this afternoon (April 6th, 2026), a cold front is moving across Madeira. Expect a significant drop in temperature, stronger winds, and showers that will continue over the next few days. However, the most important news is the orange warning for high waves and strong surf, which is in effect for the entire north coast and the island of Porto Santo.

  • Who is affected? Anyone planning activities by the sea on the north of the island.
  • What does this mean in practice? High and unpredictable waves pose a significant risk. Swimming in the natural pools at Porto Moniz and Seixal is dangerous, as are walks along coastal promenades or taking photos at the edge of cliffs.
  • What we recommend: Cancel any plans for swimming or trips to the north coast for today. Move your activities to the more sheltered south (e.g., around Funchal, Calheta, or Ponta do Sol). Pack a waterproof jacket in your backpack.

Hiking Trail Status: Restrictions in the Mountains

The adverse weather of the past few days has also impacted the condition of some popular trails. The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has reported several important restrictions.

Closed Trails

Due to landslides and falling rocks, the following two trails are completely closed until further notice:

  • PR 10 Levada do Furado (in the section Ribeiro Frio – Lamaceiros)
  • PR 18 Levada do Rei

Restrictions in the Central Massif (Pico do Areeiro / Pico Ruivo)

The area of the highest peaks is affected by several issues:

  • Impassable Road: The forest road connecting Eira do Serrado and Pico do Areeiro is closed due to fallen trees. Access to Pico do Areeiro by car from this direction is not possible.
  • Partial Closure of PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro: The most famous ridge trail is only accessible from the summit of Pico do Areeiro to the Ninho da Manta viewpoint and onwards to Pedra Rija (approx. 1.2 km). The eastern part of the trail towards the tunnels is closed. Therefore, the crossing between the Areeiro and Ruivo peaks is not possible.
  • Good News – The Path to Pico Ruivo: The ascent to Madeira’s highest mountain from the Achada do Teixeira car park (trail PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo) is fully open and without restrictions.

Our Recommendations

Do not plan a hike on Levada do Furado or Levada do Rei today. If you are heading to Pico Ruivo, choose the only certain and safe route: the ascent from Achada do Teixeira (PR 1.2).

Don’t Forget: New Access Rules for PR Trails

Since the beginning of 2026, a new system for accessing marked hiking trails (PR) has been in effect in Madeira. Don’t forget to arrange your permit in advance.

  • Who is affected? All hikers over the age of 12.
  • What does this mean in practice? To access the trails, you must have purchased a permit and made a reservation through the government’s Simplifica portal. When planning multiple hikes, the application will automatically offer you a more cost-effective multi-day pass. Residents and children have free access.
  • What we recommend: Make your reservation online in advance. Nature rangers conduct checks, and the fines are high.
